 Local athletes have been very much to the fore in a series of long distance road races recently in locations spread across the globe.


There was ongoing success for Alun Williams, formerly of Barmouth, but now based in Queenstown on the South Island of New Zealand, as he grabbed overall race victory in the Southland Times Cromwell Half Marathon Race held in the Central Otago region of the South Island. Victory over the 13.1 mile course was attained by the former member of Bro Dysynni AC in a time of 1hr 18.09mins.


Three intrepid members of Meirionnydd RC also visited foreign shores recently as they headed to the Turkish capital of Istanbul for a series of races. Taking on the Istanbul Marathon was Juliet Edwards of Dolgellau who covered the 26.2 mile distance in an excellent time of 4hrs 09.07mins, a time which claimed 54th position out of the 234 female competitiors who completed the event. Also in action, in the affiliated 15k Road Race in Istanbul were two further athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd RC. Leading home the duo, as well as being the first British athlete home within his event was Tom Roberts of Dolgellau, claiming an impressive 26th finishing spot out of more than 2,000 finishers in a time of 56.42mins. Also completing the 15k event was Nich Bradley of Dolgellau, 375th overall in a time of 1hr 15.02mins.


A healthy contingent of local athletes also formed part of the 15,000 strong field at the Cardiff Half Marathon recently. Leading home the locally affiliated athletes was Dylan Jones of Aberdyfi, the Dysynni athlete home in a time of 1hr 19.44mins. Two further Dysynni athletes followed as Gavin Griffiths, formerly of Tywyn, came home in 1hr 37.56mins and he, in turn, was followed by Aberdyfi-based Rhian Jones in a time of 1hr 44.37mins. The 5 strong Meirionnydd RC contingent were led home by Sandra Williams in 1hr 51.19mins, Dolgellau's Adam & Janet Preston came home together in 1hr 51.52mins with the Trawsfynydd-based combination of Jacqueline & Haydn Fowler coming home in respective times of 2hrs 08.50mins & 2hrs 21.36mins. The locally affiliated contingent was completed by the effervescent Sheila Symonds of Dolgellau, as the Dysynni stalwart came home in a time of 3hrs 09.39mins.





Prior to completing the Cardiff Half Marathon, Trawsfynydd-based Jacqueline & Haydn Fowler were also in action at two other city half marathons. First up was the Bristol Half Marathon, with Jacqueline covering the 13.1 miles in a time of 2hrs 08.52mins & Haydn in 2hrs 25.19mins. Their attention then switched to Nottingham where Jacqueline covered the course in 2hrs 11.00mins & Haydn in 2hrs 27.29mins.
