News Report 30th June 2013

A trio of athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd Running Club made the trip to a wet and windy Horseshoe Pass near Llangollen recently, the starting point for the 9.4 mile Moel Y Gamelin Fell Race, an event which also included an overall 2,380 feet of climbing. The race had also been chosen as the third counter of the six races which make up the 2013 inov-8/Welsh Fell Running Association Open Welsh Championships and, as such, attracted a field of exceptional quality. The Meirionnydd trio in action were led home by two Ffestiniog-based athletes, as Mark Atherton claimed an overall 18th spot finish in a time of 1hr 21.42mins with Alan Jones following, 32nd overall in a time of 1hr 28.19mins. The trio were completed by Juliet Edwards, as a time of 1hr 45.32mins secured 2nd spot within the Female Over-50 category for the Dolgellau based athlete.

Bro Dysynni A.C. athlete, Andy Unwin, also saw competitive action recently, his chosen event being the Salt Ayre 5k, a race run exclusively along the cycle paths adjacent to the River Lune in Lancaster, the Harlech-based athlete beaming as he crossed the finishing line at the event in a steady time of 30.22mins.

The 10 race Tuesday Night Series organised by Eryri Harriers has recently been completed with over 280 athletes seeing competitive action in one or more of the events. With over 100 athletes completing the four races needed to qualify for the final results, two Meirionnydd R.C. athletes were included in the final results, albeit having completed only one of the 10 events. For this, Ifan Richards of Brithdir was placed in 237th position within the final standings, with club colleague, Graeme Stringer of Llanelltyd, following in 255th spot.

There is local action this coming Saturday (6th July) as Bryncrug will host the popular Ras Foel Gocyn as part of its carnival festivities. The mountain race which measures approximately 4 miles in length is due off at 2.45pm with registration taking place on the carnival field from 2.00pm. Entries on the day will be accepted.
