The male athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd Running Club tightened their grip at the head of Division 2 of the Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross Country League at the penultimate fixture of the season, which was held at the National Sports Centre in Lilleshall, Shropshire recently.

Leading home the 7 strong male club contingent in action was Ifan Richards of Brithdir, 11th on the day in a time of 36.14mins. A mere 32 seconds seperated the next three Meirionnydd finishers as Huw Brassington of Bontddu and the Dolgellau duo of Tom Roberts & Adam Preston came home in respective times of 39.21mins, 39.29mins & 39.53mins, with Dave Seabourne, also of Dolgellau, following in 44.24mins. The team were completed by Dylan Evans of Aberdyfi & John Smith of Dolgellau, home in respective times of 45.52mins & 48.28mins.

As a result of the above, Meirionnydd maintained their commanding position at the head of Division 2 and take an overall lead of 181 points into the final fixture of the season which is being held at the Marches School in Oswestry this coming Saturday afternoon.

In the Junior Male event, there were strong performances from Alex Lanz of Dolgellau & Jamie Evans of Aberdyfi, the former claiming a 3rd place finish in a time of 20.31mins, the latter home in 6th position in a time of 22.43mins.

In the Ladies Race, the Meirionnydd duo of Jude Evans of Aberdyfi & Sioned Jones of Brithdir claimed 'Top 50' finishes in times of 30.55mins & 31.11mins, with the sole Bro Dysynni athlete in action on the day, Brenda Jones of Llanelltyd, following in a time of 32.09mins, a time which also claimed victory within the Female Over-65 section of the event.

With the final league fixture due this Saturday, the Meirionnydd female section sit comfortably in mid-table of Division 2 in 6th postion, ahead of their Bro Dysynni counterparts who lay in 11th spot.
