With much of the country still in the grip of Arctic like conditions, local athletes have recently headed for sunnier climbs in the search for active competition.

As has become the norm for over a decade, a group of locally affiliated athletes and their supporters recently headed to the Canary Island of Lanzarote to participate in the 22nd Annual Lanzarote International Running Challenge. Facing the competitors was a 4 race series consisting of the Clasica de Lanzarote 10k Road Race, a 13k Ridge Run, a 5k Beach Run before the final gruelling 21k Vuelta de Tinajo.

Of the tour party, a quartet of athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd Running Club completed the 4 race series. The quartet were led home by the Dolgellau based trio of Juliet Edwards, Jan Preston & Margaret Roberts who completed the challenge in respective times of 4hrs 16.03mins, 4hrs 35.19mins & 4hrs 40.12mins. Completing the quartet was Rob Thomas of Llanelltyd in an excellent 4hrs 40.18mins. One locally affiliated athlete chose to compete in one of the events, as Adam Preston of Dolgellau completed the 13k Ridge Run in a pleasing time of 51.35mins.

Also competing in sunnier climbs recently has been Darren Cole of Dinas Mawddwy, his chosen location being Clearwater in Florida, the venue for the Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3 Triathlon. In a race consisting of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56k bike leg before a final 13.1 mile running section, the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete came home in a magnificent time of 4hrs 23.16mins, claiming 42nd spot within the Male 35-39 age category against world class opposition.

Finally, closer to home, Tom Roberts of Dolgellau headed to the West Midlands recently, his chosen race being the Cannock Rotary 10k Road Race. In an event which attracted 194 competitors, the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete claimed a superb 6th placed finish, as he stopped the clock in an outstanding time of 37.12mins.
