Fell runners from throughout the United Kingdom descended upon Llanberis recently as Eryri Harriers played host to the 25th running of the UKA British Fell and Relay Championships. A total of 179 teams consisting of six athletes per team were in action, and amongst those were a team from Meirionnydd Running Club entered in the Over-50's age category. Leading off for Meirionnydd in the 1st leg of the event was Clive Edgington of Friog who covered his 7.4k leg which included 350 metres of climbing in a time of 51.51 mins. The 2nd leg was a pairs section whereby teams of two saw action over a 14.3k course which included an overall 990 metres of climbing. The Dolgellau duo of Juliet Edwards and Nich Bradley put in a pleasing performance to complete the section in a time of 2 hrs 04.24 mins. The 3rd leg was a navigational leg which Kevin Evans of Brithdir and Dylan Evans of Bryncrug completed in a time of 3 hrs 05.44 mins. The anchor led was completed by Kevin Jones of Dolgellau who completed his 8.4k section which included 610 metres of climbing in a time of 1 hr 00.04 mins. The combined time over the four legs for the Meirionnydd team was 7 hrs 02.03 mins which placed them in an overall 14th position within the Over-50 section at the event.

Last Saturday, a further quartet of locally affiliated athletes were also in Llanberis, their challenge being the 26.2 mile Snowdonia Marathon, an event starting and finishing in Llanberis and encircling Snowdon on a demanding and undulating route. Leading home the quartet in action was Sandra Williams of Dolgellau, the Meirionnydd athlete producing an imperious performance to complete the event in a time of 4 hrs 20.34 mins. There was age category success for the 1st of the three Bro Dysynni athletes in action as Brenda Jones of Llanelltyd claimed victory within the Female Over-70 section in a tremendous time of 4 hrs 57.44 mins. Months of training paid dividends for Marit Evans of Dolgellau, the 2nd Dysynni finisher in a time of 5 hrs 21.25 mins whilst the Dysynni trio were completed by Marj Griffiths, the Aberystwyth based athlete claiming 3rd spot within the Female Over-65 section in a time of 5 hrs 49.28 mins.

Two Meirionnydd athletes also saw half marathon action recently, covering the 13.1 mile course at the BUPA Birmingham Half Marathon. The duo were led home by Jacqueline Fowler of Trawsfynydd in a time of 2 hrs 05.20 mins with Lucy Llewellyn of Dinas Mawddwy following in a pleasing 2 hrs 34.15 mins.
