News Report 28th August 2006

In a relatively quiet week for local athletes, perhaps the most impressive performance came in the gruelling 19 mile Brecon Beacons Fell Race. In addition to the extreme distance, the competitors also had to cope with an arduous 4,500 feet of climbing. However, rising to the challenge was John Marsh of Tarren Hendre whose finishing time of 3hrs 20.44mins claimed an excellent victory in the male veteran over-60 category as well as an overall 16th place finish out of the 37 fell runners who undertook the severe challenge.

Two Bro Dysynni athletes were also amongst the age group category victors at the 7 mile Gyrn Gallop Fell Race held at Llansilin to the west of Oswestry. In a race which included 1,200 feet of climbing, Walter Marsh of Tywyn claimed victory in the male over-55 category in 52.05mins whilst Barrie Jackson of Bala dominated the male over-65 category as he crossed the line in 58.12mins.

In a week when the local veterans shone, Tony Hodgson of Llanelltyd was another age group victor, on this occasion at the 4 mile Ponderosa Hill Race held near Llangollen. The Meirionnydd Running Club athlete completed the uphill course in a fine time of 32.22mins to claim victory in the male over-55 section.

The only non-veteran athlete in action recently has been Dewi Roberts of Blaenau Ffestiniog who headed to the Bangor area for the 4.5 mile Mynydd Llandygai Fell Race. A quality field of athletes, predominantly from Eryri Harriers, led to a highly competitive race with the Dysynni athlete pleased with his eventual 7th place finish in a time of 30.31mins. In the affiliated Fun Run, 8 year-old Aaron Roberts outshone his father's performance as he claimed victory over the 0.5 mile course in a terrific time of 3.12mins to suggest that he may well be a star athlete of the future!
