Athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd Running Club came very much to the fore at the recent 38th running of the Tyn Lon Volvo International Snowdon Race. The event this year also included a new challenge, namely the Snowdon Super Cup, the challenge being to run from Llanberis to the peak of Snowdon, a distance of some 5 miles to the summit which lays 3,560 feet above sea level. The Super Cup this year was an invite only demonstration race. Amongst those to receive an invite to form part of the strong Welsh team in action was Glyn Griifin, the Llanfrothen based athlete producing an excellent performance to reach the summit in a time of 50.10mins which claimed an overall 13th spot finish within the event. A further five athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd took on the more traditional race, starting and finishing in Llanberis and taking in the five mile climb up Snowdon followed by the five mile descent. Leading home the five and showing excellent form was Alex Lanz, the Dolgellau based athlete home in a time of 1hr 31.32mins. Alan Jones of Blaenau Ffestiniog was the next Meirionnydd finisher in a time of 1hr 37.54mins, followed home by Arfon Hughes of Dolgellau in a time of 1hr 46.03mins. Dylan Evans of Bryncrug was the fourth Meirionnydd finisher home in a time of 1hr 50.22mins with Juliet Edwards completing the Meirionnydd contingent as a time of 1hr 52.03mins also claimed overall age category victory within the Female Over-50 section for the Dolgellau based athlete.

Elsewhere recently, Clive Edgington of Friog completed the Banstead Woods 5k Park Run in Surrey, the Meirionnydd athlete claiming an overall 12th placed finish at the event in a time of 19.45mins.

For the second consecutive week, the athlete running at a destination furthest from his native North Wales was Andy Unwin, as the Bro Dysynni runner took on the 6k Let's Run for Road Safety event held on the island of Cebu in the Philippines. In a race which started at 6.00am to avoid the extreme humidity, the Harlech based athlete was beaming as he crossed the finishing line in a time of 43.07 mins to finish in 62nd spot out of the 298 competitors.
