An impressive field of 87 fell runners gathered in Llanuwchllyn recently for the 7th annual running of the Organic Aran Lamb-sponsored Ras Yr Aran. Facing the athletes was a 10 mile course to be run in challenging conditions, as well as an overall climb of some 2,500 feet.

Having won the race in 2005 whilst running in the colours of Eryri Harriers, there was a repeat victory in 2010 for Tim Higgingbottom, now running unattached, as he completed the course in an impressive time of 1hr 38.35mins. The first of the seven strong Meirionnydd Running Club contingent to complete the challenge, claiming an overall 3rd placed finish was Ifan Richards of Brithdir, a little over 2 minutes behind the race winner, as he crossed the finishing line in a time 1hr 40.51mins.

Victory in the female category of the race was achieved by Helen Fines (Calder Valley Fell Runners) in a time of 1hr 48.37mins, which also claimed a 9th place finish in the overall proceedings, one place ahead of Adam Preston of Dolgellau, the 2nd Meirionnydd Running Club athlete home, in a time of 1hr 48.42mins. It was left to Dylan Jones of Aberdyfi to fly the flag for Bro Dysynni A.C. on this occasion, as he claimed a 19th placed finish in a time of 1hr 55.42mins. Five athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd Running Club followed as Tom Roberts of Dolgellau came home in 1hr 57.37mins, Dave Whittey of Llanelltyd re-appearing after a break from competitive action, home in 2hrs 02.12mins, just ahead of another Llanelltyd-based athlete, as Tony Hodgson came home in a time of 2hrs 05.15mins, which also claimed age category success in the Male Over-60 category. The team were complete by Nich Bradley of Dolgellau, home in 2hrs 29.37mins & Pete Nicholls of Llanfachreth, home in 2hrs 32.16mins.

As ever, the race organisers expressed their deep gratitide to all those who gave of their time so freely on the day to help make the event such a success. Thanks were also extended to the various landowners over whose land the race was run.

The race also constituted the final event of the Meirionnydd Winter Race series, a 3 race challenge including the Tarren Hendre and Rhobell Fawr fell races. At the end of the challenge, series victory was claimed by Ifan Richards in a cumulative time of 3hrs 27.33mins. Adam Preston claimed an overall 4th place in a time of 3hrs 44.43mins, Tom Roberts, 10th in 3hrs 57.21mins, Dylan Jones, 11th in 3hrs 58.26mins, Tony Hodgson, 16th in 4hrs 18.53mins & Nich Bradley, 18th in 5hrs 08.03mins.
