Stifling heat greeted the athletes who descended upon Dolgellau last Saturday afternoon for the Royal Ship Hotel sponsored Cader Idris Mountain Race. Facing the athletes was a 10.5 mile course, starting and finishing in Eldon Square in the centre of Dolgellau, taking in the 3,000 feet climb to the summit of Cader Idris and back.

A total of 236 athletes completed the race, led home by Matthew Roberts, the Eryri Harrier crossing the finishing line in a time of 1hr 28.43mins. Perhaps the performance of the day came in the female's race, as former English Fell Running Champion, Lauren Jeska, now affiliated to Aberystwyth A.C. claimed an impressive victory in a time of 1hr 41.14mins, which was also the 13th fastest time overall.

As ever, a number of locally affiliated athletes took on the challenge presented by Ras Y Cader. Unsurprisingly, the local contingent were led home by Ifan Richards of Brithdir, the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete claiming an overall 5th placed finishing spot in a time of 1hr 32.27mins. Two further Meirionnydd athletes had a race long battle, with Glyn Griffin of Penrhyndeudraeth eventually pipping Kevin Jones of Dolgellau, the two home in respective times of 1hr 44.42mins and 1hr 44.49mins. Leading home the Bro Dysynni athletes in action was Tom Jones, the Aberdyfi based athlete crossing the finishing line in 1hr 55.11mins. Two athletes with a strong Dolgellau background followed, led home by Arfon Hughes, the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete home in 2hrs 04.47mins to be followed by the impressive Lesley Harris, home in 2hrs 06.26mins. A further six athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd R.C. followed, led home by Llanelltyd based Tony Hodgson, completing the course in 2hrs 07.01mins. Dylan Evans of Bryncrug followed in 2hrs 10.00mins and there was little to seperate Pete Nicholls of Llanfachreth and Ricky Francis of Talyllyn, the two home in respective times of 2hrs 19.40mins and 2hrs 19.59mins. Martin King was the next Meirionnydd finisher in 2hrs 29.06mins, a mere 11 seconds clear of Kevin Evans of Brithdir who followed in 2hrs 29.17mins. Richard Griffiths of Tywyn was the next Dysynni finisher in a time of 2hrs 39.34mins, ahead of two further Dolgellau-based Meirionnydd athletes, namely Dai Rice, home in 2hrs 45.44mins and Emma Davies who followed in 2hrs 47.34mins. The local contingent was completed by the 2nd Bro Dysynni member of the Tywyn-based Griffiths family in action, as Gavin Griffiths crossed the line in a time of 3hrs 10.18mins.

There was also local success within the Under-18's race, with victory being claimed by Alex Lanz of Dolgellau.
