With the 2011 Virgin London Marathon a little over a fortnight away, three athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd R.C. put their marathon training to the test recently as they headed to Rhayader, as the Powys town hosted the annual 20 Miles Around the Lakes Race.


Using the race to gauge their preparations for the London event were the Dolgellau-based trio of Adam Preston, Sandra Williams & Janet Preston, completing the event in respective times of 2hrs 16.35mins, 3hrs 09.10mins & 3hrs 09.22mins. A further Meirionnydd athlete competing in Rhayader but not having entered London was Glyn Rowlands of Arthog, putting in a strong shift as he crossed the finishing line in a time of 2hrs 52.57mins.


The shorter 5 mile race affiliated to the Rhayader event saw Brenda Jones of Llanelltyd put in a sterling perfomance, the Bro Dysynni athlete home in a time of 42.06mins.


Meirionnydd R.C. were also represented recently as Abergwyngregyn, near Bangor, played host to the Moel Wnion Fell Race, a 4.5 mile event which included an overall 1,800 feet of climbing. The athlete in question was Victor Gretton, home in a highly respectable time of 1hr 07.06mins.


Finally, the recent Ras Yr Aran Fell Race was also the final 'counter' within the 2010-11 Meirionnydd Winter Race Series, a trio of events which also included the Rhobell Fawr & Tarren Hendre Fell Races. A quartet of athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd R.C. completed the series, namely Tony Hodgson of Llanelltyd, victorious in the Male Over-60 Section, in a cumulative time of 4hrs 14.02mins, the Dolgellau-based duo of Nich Bradley and John Smith, claiming overall 12th and 14th spots in times of 4hrs 41.56mins & 4hrs 50.24mins, narrowly ahead of Kevin Evans of Brithdir who completed the 3 race series in an overall time of 4hrs 54.16mins.
