Championship races have been very much to the fore recently, with locally affiliated athletes placing well in both national and regional competition.

On a national level, Clive Edgington recently made the long journey south to the Glan Usk Park near Crickhowell, the chosen venue for the 109th running of the Welsh National Cross Country Championships. Competing within the Senior Male category, the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete produced a strong performance on the day to claim an overall 54th placed finishing position in a time of 42.39mins.

The same athlete was also in action prior to the Welsh Championships, as the Rhug Estate near Corwen played host to the North Wales Cross Country Championships recently. On this occasion, the Friog based athlete claimed Championship Gold within the Male Over-55 category, completing the course in a time 48.00mins. Also claiming Championship Gold at the event, on this occasion within the Female Over-70 category, was Bro Dysynni athlete, Brenda Jones, the Llanelltyd based runner victorious in a time of 34.53mins. Completing the locally affiliated turn out at the North Wales Championships was Bala based Barrie Jackson, the Meirionnydd R.C. runner claiming a 4th spot finish within the Male Over-70 category in a time of 42.14mins.

Having won Championship Gold at the Rhug Estate, Brenda Jones repeated the success shortly afterwards, on this occasion claiming Championship Gold at the North Wales Half Marathon Championships, an event affiliated with the 18th running of the Village Bakery Wrexham Half Marathon. Victory on this occasion was attained in a time of 2hrs 01.46mins.

Finally, one locally affiliated athlete was in action last Saturday afternoon, heading to Tregarth, near Bangor, for the 5 mile Ras Moel Y Ci Fell Race, an event which also included an overall 950 feet of climbing. The athlete in question was Alan Jones of Ffestiniog, the Meirionnydd R.C. runner claiming an overall 34th placed finish amongst the 131 who completed the race in an overall time of 44.47mins.
