News Report 22nd August  2010

Two of Bro Dysynni's excellent female veteran contingent made the trip to Montgomery recently, their chosen event being the Neil Howells Memorial Race, a 4.5 mile off-road event. As has become the norm recently, both athletes also dominated their age group category within the race, as Brenda Jones of Llanelltyd claimed victory in the Female Over-65 section in a time of 45.17mins with Sheila Symonds of Dolgellau winning the Female Over-75 category in a tremendous time of 75.17mins.

Their was also local representation at the recent Snowdon Uphill Trial Race, an event run purely uphill in Llanberis. In the 'Senior Male' category, Ifan Richards of Brithdir took on the 6.8mile climb which took in an overall ascent of 3,563 feet, the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete reaching the finishing line at Garnedd Ugain in a time of 62.25mins to claim an overall 28th placed finish. In the 'Senior Ladies' race, there was an excellent performance from an athlete with a strong liaison with the Porthmadog area, as Alaw Benyon-Thomas of Carmarthen Harriers completed her 4.5mile challenge, which included 3,210 feet of climbing, in a time of 55.17mins to claim an excellent 10th placed finish within the female category.

Having run an uphill only race in Llanberis, Ifan Richards balanced this out by running a purely downhill race soon afterwards. That race was the Tryfan Downhill Dash, a 1k downhill sprint covering a treacherous descent of some 680 metres on the slopes of Tryfan in Eryri. Throwing caution to the wind, the Brithdir-based athlete claimed overall race victory in a time of 8.30mins, which also represented the 4th fastest time in the 20 year history of this unique event.

Further afield, there was a personal best performance from Alun Williams, formerly of Barmouth, but now based on the South Island of New Zealand. His chosen event was the Clyde to Alexandra 10k Road Race which also included the Otago Championships, the former member of Bro Dysynni A.C. completing the challenge in 10th place overall in a time of 32.39mins.
