Extremely warm conditions greeted the strong local presence at the 26th running of the Flora London Marathon held last Sunday. Whereas every competitor at the event ensured race-day hardship, one local who deserves special mention is Tony Hodgson who chose to run the 262 miles from his Llanelltyd home to the event, starting 11 days before the race and then completing the final 26.1 miles on race-day. Despite suffering from shin-splints during the run down to London, the Llanelltyd based veteran still managed to complete his race-day activities in an outstanding time of 4hrs 37.56mins.

 

Leading home the locals affiliated to either Bro Dysynni AC or Meirionnydd Running Club was Mike Palmer of Tywyn in superb time of 3hrs 19.55mins. He was followed by Lindsay Parry of Bryncrug, home in 4hrs 05.58mins, with Kevin Evans and Frankie Vaughan of Dolgellau following in respective times of 4hrs 12.53mins and 4hrs 14.46mins. Pete Nicholls of Llanfachreth was the next local finisher in 4hrs 46.46mins with Rob Thomas of Llanelltyd finishing his first ever marathon distance event in a time of 4hrs 53.32mins. Also completing his first ever marathon, in a time of 5hrs 06.30mins, was Joseff Lea of Dolgellau with Tywyn super-veteran, Alan Morton, hot on his heels in a time of 5hrs 14.39mins. Running together at their inaugural marathon were Tracey Evans of Dolgellau and Sue Nicholls of Llanfachreth, finishing in respective times of 5hrs 31.37mins and 5hrs 31.41mins. The local contingent was completed by Theresa Pirie, home in a time of 7hrs 04.52mins.

 

Away from the London event, two Bro Dysynni athletes were recently crowned age category national champions at the Welsh 10 Mile Road Running Championships held as part of the Teifi Ten race in Lampeter. Continuing her amazing recent record of achievement was Brenda Jones of Llanelltyd adding yet another medal to her vast collection as she won the female over-65 category in a time of 1hr 25.48mins. Joining her as age category national champion was Sheila Symonds of Dolgellau, continuing her recent rennaisance as she was victorious in the female over-70 section in a superb time of 2hrs 00.46mins.

 

Finally, a local duo were in action at the Llantysylio Mountain Race held in Rhewl, near Llangollen. Covering the 6.2mile course which included 2,100 feet of climbing were Andrea Goode of Dolgellau in 1hr 16.50mins and Barrie Jackson of Bala in 1hr 18.09mins.
