News Report 22nd March 2014 Ras yr Aran

The weather took a turn for the worse last Saturday lunchtime resulting in strong winds and snow to greet the 81 competitors who headed to Llanuwchllyn for the Organic Aran Lamb sponsored Ras Yr Aran Fell Race, the third and final counter within the 2013-14 Meirionnydd Winter Race Series. The inclement weather ensured a slight alteration to the course, but even with this alteration the competitors were still met with 8 inches of snow at the turnaround point of Llyn Aran Penllyn. The race itself saw a relatively comfortable victory for Aberystwyth A.C. athlete, Felipe Jones, following up his 2nd place at the event in 2012 with victory in 2014 in a time of 1 hr 06.46 mins. Victory within the female category was claimed by Katie Beecher of Les Croupiers in a time of 1 hr 24.06 mins.

The local contingent in action were led home by Huw Brassington, the Bont Ddu based triathlete claiming an excellent 7th spot in a time of 1 hr 15.21 mins. Alex Lanz of Dolgellau continued his strong start to 2014, the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete claiming 2nd spot within the Junior Male category in a time of 1 hr 25.24 mins. Two further Meirionnydd athletes followed, Arfon Hughes of Dolgellau in a time of 1 hr 28.31 mins with Nicola Rees of Arthog following in 1 hr 52.03 mins. There was also Bro Dysynni A.C. representation at the event, with Tywyn based Richard Vroom completing the race in a pleasing time of 2 hrs 24.19 mins.

The final standings of the Meirionnydd Winter Race Series also made for interesting reading. The series, based on cumulative times for three local fell races, namely Rhobell Fawr, Tarren Hendre and Ras Yr Aran saw Huw Brassington victorious in an overall time of 2 hrs 55.54 mins. Arfon Hughes claimed 2nd spot in an overall 3 hrs 23.27 mins with Richard Vroom completing the podium, 3rd overall in a cumulative time of 5 hrs 16.24 mins. Victory within the female section of the series went to Nicola Rees in an overall time of 4 hrs 20.49 mins.
