Having taken a well earned rest over the festive period, local athletes returned to competitive action recently as the National Sports Centre in Lilleshall, Shropshire played host to the penultimate fixture of the 2011-12 Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross Country League.

Having performed admirably over the first three fixtures, the male athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd Running Club further consolidated their 2nd position in the top tier of the league, as 6 of their 10 athletes in action on the day claimed a finishing position within the top 50. Leading home the Meirionnydd athletes, and laying down a marker for 2012, was Dylan Jones of Aberdyfi, as a finishing time of 34.11mins saw him beat club colleague, Ifan Richards, by a mere 3 seconds, the Brithdir based athlete home in 34.14mins. Hot on their heels was Huw Brassington of Bontddu, home in 34.33mins with Kevin Jones of Dolgellau following in 34.53mins. Another Dolgellau-based athlete followed in the guise of Adam Preston, with a finishing time of 35.20mins, a little over a minute ahead of club colleague, Clive Edgington of Arthog, finishing in 36.24mins. There then followed a further quartet of Meirionnydd athletes in the shape of Dylan Evans of Bryncrug, Ricky Francis of Talyllyn and the Dolgellau duo of Arfon Hughes & John Smith who finished in respective times of 39.35mins, 40.40mins, 42.04mins & 44.09mins. With the last league fixture being held in Oswestry in a little under a fortnights time, the senior male team of Meirionnydd now look assured of taking runners up spot in the top tier, quite an achievement in their 1st ever season in Division 1 of the league.

Also completing for Meirionnydd, on this occasion in the Under-17's race held in Lilleshall were Alex Lanz of Dolgellau & Jamie Evans of Bryncrug, claiming 4th & 7th spot in the age category in respective times of 20.38mins & 21.58mins.

The senior females race saw seven locally affiliated athletes in action, 4 affiliated to Bro Dysynni A.C. and 3 to Meirionnydd R.C. However, it was the trio affiliated to Meirionnydd who led the local contingent home, as Andrea Vaughan of Ganllwyd & the Dolgellau-based duo of Juliet Edwards & Janet Preston came home in times of 24.26mins, 25.38mins and 28.50mins. Leading home the Dysynni quartet, as well as claiming age category success in the Over-70 section was Brenda Jones, the Llanelltyd based athlete home in a time of 32.15mins. Club colleague, Yolanda Marconi-Nolan followed in a time of 33.31mins with Marit Evans of Dolgellau and Marj Griffiths of Aberystwyth completing the quartet as they came home in times of 34.11mins and 35.07mins. After completing 4 of the 5 league fixtures, Meirionnydd currently sit in 5th place in Division 2, with Dysynni claiming 10th spot in the same division.

Also in action recently was a past member of Bro Dysynni, namely Alun Williams, previously of Barmouth, but now based in the South Island of New Zealand. His most recent outing came at the 12k Race the Kingston Flyer Steam Train event held in Otago on the South Island. Although beating the train comfortably, the Welshman had to settle for 2nd place in the event on this occasion, in an excellent finishing time of 41.09mins.
