Locally affiliated athletes have braved the recent hot weather, seeing competitive action at a wide variety of races run over a wide variety of distances.

A quartet of athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd Running Club headed to Shropshire for the Striperstones Fell Race, a 3.2 mile event which included 800 feet of climbing. The race was also the 5th event within the Shropshire Hills Summer Series. Leading home the quartet in action was Ricky Francis, the Talyllyn based athlete home in a time of 37.49mins, just under 3 minutes clear of Graeme Stringer of Llanelltyd who followed in a time of 40.43mins. The 3rd Meirionnydd finisher was Nicola Rees in a time of 46.53mins with Heidi Roden completing the Meirionnydd contingent, the Arthog based athlete home in a time of 47.25mins.

Two Ffestiniog based athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd R.C. also headed to the hills recently, their chosen event being the Tal Y Fan Fell Race, run over an 8 mile course which included an overall 2,580 feet of climbing, held at Rowen within the Conwy Valley. Mark Atherton led home the duo, 10th overall in a time of 1hr 19.51mins with club colleague Alan Jones following, 13th overall in 1hr 25.46mins.

Prior to the Tal Y Fan event, Mark Atherton was also in action at the testing Moel Siabod Fell Race in Capel Curig. On this occasion, the Ffestiniog based athlete completed the 5.4 mile course which included 2,300 feet of climbing in a time of 55.13mins which earned an excellent 6th placed finish in the final standings.

A further duo affiliated to Meirionnydd R.C. were also in action recently at the Fairy Freckled Cow Trail Race based at the Alwen Reservoir near Cerrigydrudion. Completing the 11k trail race were Clive Edgington, the Friog based athlete home in a time of 48.46mins, and a busy Graeme Stringer, on this occasion home in 62.36mins.

Five further athletes, two affiliated to Meirionnydd R.C. & 3 to Bro Dysynni A.C. have also been in individual action at races recently. For Meirionnydd, Sandra Williams of Dolgellau completed the off-road Wyre Forest Trail Half Marathon in Worcestershire, covering the 13.1 mile course in a time of 2hrs 09.57mins whilst Jeff Davies completed the Didcot 5 Mile Road Race in Oxfordshire in 34.27mins, a time which also claimed 2nd spot within the Male Over-60 category. For Bro Dysynni A.C., Gavin Griffiths, formerly of Tywyn, completed the 'Scenic 7', a 7 mile road race held within the Cwmcarn Forest Drive near Cwmbran in a time of 69.26mins, whilst Geraint Evans of Porthmadog completed the Llanfair PG 5k in a pleasing time of 26.39mins. The final Bro Dysynni A.C. in action was Andy Unwin, his chosen event being the Petron Run For Safety 5k Race held in Cebu in the Phillipines. In an event which started at 5.45am to avoid the daytime humidity, the Harlech based athlete came home beaming in a time of 32.59mins.

There is local action this coming Saturday afternoon as Dolgellau will play host to the annual 'Dol 5' Road Race. The main 5 mile event is due off at 1.30pm with the affiliated 1 mile fun run due off at 12.30pm from the Marian in Dolgellau.
