The onset of Autumn coincides with the start of the cross country season as Treborth near Bangor recently played host to the first of the five fixtures which make up the 2013/14 Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross Country League.

In the Senior Men's race, a total of 6 athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd Running Club were in action, the six being led home by Ifan Richards, the Brithdir-based athlete claiming an overall 9th spot finish in a time of 33.03 mins. There was a strong performance from Dolgellau-based Alex Lanz, 22nd overall in a time of 35.04 mins, clear of Ffestiniog athlete, Alan Jones, who completed the course in an overall time of 37.59 mins. Arfon Hughes of Dolgellau was the fourth Meirionnydd counter in a time of 41.18 mins with club debutante, Elfyn Hughes of Ffestiniog, following in a time of 41.40 mins. The final Meirionnydd finisher was Daniel Jones in a time of 45.24 mins with the combined effort of the six seeing the Meirionnydd team laying in the 6th spot in Division 1 after the season opener.

In the Senior Ladies race, Juliet Edwards was the sole Meirionnydd representative, the Dolgellau based athlete home in a time of 25.21 mins, clear of the trio of Bro Dysynni athletes who tackled the course. They were led home by Marit Evans of Dolgellau, who this weekend will be tackling the Snowdon Marathon, in a time of 29.30 mins, 9 seconds clear of club mate, Brenda Jones of Llanelltyd, who followed in 29.39 mins. The trio was completed by Yolanda Marconi-Nolan, crossing the finishing line in a time of 33.25 mins. After the 1st race, the league table shows Bro Dysynni in 8th spot and Meirionnydd in 10th in the second tier of the league.

A quartet of Meirionnydd athletes also headed to Criggion in Shropshire recently, their chosen event being the Breidden Hills Fell Race, a 7 mile event which included an overall 2,300 feet of climbing. The quartet were led home by a busy Alan Jones, on this occasion the Ffestiniog athlete completing the course in 1 hr 07.48 mins. Dave Elliott of Machynlleth was the second Meirionnydd finisher in a time of 1 hr 10.30 mins with the Dolgellau duo of Arfon Hughes and Juliet Edwards following in respective times of 1 hr 13.08 mins and 1 hr 23.27 mins.

Two Meirionnydd athletes took to the road recently as they headed to Mold for the Flintshire 10k. A resurgent Tom Roberts of Dolgellau completed the course in a pleasing time of 40.13 mins whilst Graeme Stringer of Llanelltyd showed much gumption to come home in an overall time of 48.00 mins.

Finally, Jeff Davies saw action in the Cotswolds recently as the Wiltshire town of Cricklade played host to a half marathon, the Meirionnydd athlete completing the 13.1 mile course in a strong time of 1 hr 38.39 mins.
