A trip to Shropshire was on the agenda for three locally affiliated athletes last Friday evening, their chosen event being the tough Packwood 10k Road Race. The trio were led home by Frankie Vaughan of Ganllwyd, the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete completing the challenge in a time of 45.52mins. There then followed the Bro Dysynni duo of Barrie Jackson of Bala & Malcolm Taylor of Criccieth, the former claiming 2nd spot in the Male Over-65 category in a time of 50.27mins, the latter completing the event in a satisfactory time of 57.16mins.


Prior to the Packwood event, prolific racer Frankie Vaughan was also in action at the Moel Y Gamelin Fell Race held near Llangollen. On this occasion, the Ganllwyd based athlete completed the 9.5 mile course which included a total of 2,380 feet of climbing in a pleasing time of 1hr 45.27mins.


Another Meirionnydd Running Club athlete who has seen regular competition recently is Arwyn Jones of Penmachno who has competed at seperate 3 fell running events. First up was a trip to the Loggerheads area between Mold & Ruthin for the 3.5 mile 'Hot Foot Up Famau' event, which included a total of 1,200 feet of climbing, the Penmachno athlete achieving a finishing time of 45.57mins. There then followed a trip to Maeshafn, near Mold, for the 'Trail Up The Beast' event, a 4 mile race which again included 1,200 feet of climbing, on this occasion a finishing time of 32.54 mins ensued. The trio of events were completed at the Tal Y Fan Fell Race held in Rowen in the Conwy Valley, on this occasion the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete completed the 8 mile event which included a total of 2,400 feet of climbing in a time of 1hr 32.03mins.          


There was also an outing recently for Bro Dysynni athlete, Gavin Griffiths, originally from Tywyn, now based in South Wales. His chosen event was the 'Scenic 7' race held in the Cwmcarn Forest in Gwent, the Dysynni athlete completing the tough 7 mile challenge in an excellent time of 1hr 00.24mins.


There is local action this coming Saturday afternoon, with the 8th running of the W.D. Pugh & Sons sponsored Dolgellau 5 Mile Road Race. The main event is due off at 1.30pm with the affiliated fun run due to start at 12.30pm. With entries being accepted on the day, further details relating to the race can be found on
