Arfon Hughes of Dolgellau in action at the recent Rhobell Fawr Fell Race.

Matthew Fortes gained the plaudits at the recent 11th running of the Ras Rhobell Fawr Fell Race held in Llanfachreth, near Dolgellau, the Eryri Harrier completing the 6 mile course, which included an overall 1,900 feet of climbing, in a time of 56.42 mins to claim a relatively comfortable victory by almost 2 minutes. Second spot was claimed by locally based triathlete, Huw Brassington, producing a stellar performance to complete the testing course in a time of 58.33 mins. A total of eight locally affiliated athletes also saw action in Llanfachreth and they were led home by Arfon Hughes of Dolgellau, the Meirionnydd R.C. runner completing the course in a time of 1 hr 06.53 mins. Club colleague Graeme Stringer of Llanelltyd followed in 1 hr 18.24 mins with Richard Griffiths of Tywyn next home, the first of two Bro Dysynni athletes in action, finishing in a time of 1 hr 19.22 mins. A trio of Meirionnydd athletes then followed in the guise of Brithdir based Kevin Evans, home on 1 hr 24.33 mins, and the Arthog duo of Nicola Rees and Heidi Roden recording respective finishing times of 1 hr 27.42 mins and 1 hr 32.06 mins. Richard Vroom of Tywyn was the second Dysynni finisher in a time of 1 hr 36.36 mins whilst Christine Owen of Dolgellau completed the turnout of locally affiliated competitors, the Meirionnydd athlete home in a time of 1 hr 55.55 mins.

Llyn Y Fan in the Brecon Beacons recently played host to the sixth and final event of the 2013 Inov-8 / Welsh Fell Running Association Championships. The sole locally affiliated competitor in action at the race was Juliet Edwards of Dolgellau, the Meirionnydd runner producing a gritty display to complete the 5.5 mile course, which included 1,200 feet of climbing, in a time of 1 hr 05.46 mins. Not only did this performance claim 2nd spot within the Female Over-50 category on the day, it also claimed 2nd spot within the category within the final Championship standings after the completion of the 6th and final event. Other Meirionnydd athletes to appear within the final standings were Dave Parker and Ffestiniog athlete, Alan Jones, 12th & 13th within the Senior Male category, Mark Atherton of Ffestiniog, 6th within the Male Over-40 category and Arfon Hughes of Dolgellau, 43rd within the same section.

The aforementioned Alan Jones also saw competitive action recently, the Ffestiniog based athlete choosing the Betws Y Coed 10k Trail Race as his latest race outing, an outing whereby the Meirionnydd athlete claimed an overall 13th spot finish in a pleasing time of 44.43 mins.
