Locally affiliated athletes were out in force recently as Machynlleth played host to the 2nd annual running of the Ras Glyndwr Fell Race, a challenging 3 mile event inclusive of 690 feet of climbing. In a race won by Paul Jones (Mercia Fell Runners) in a time of 21.12 mins, the first locally affiliated athlete to finish was Ifan Richards of Brithdir, on this occasion running for Cread MTB, as a time of 21.52 mins claimed an overall 3rd spot finish. Dave Parker and Dave Elliott led home the Meirionnydd Running Club contingent in respective times of 22.46 mins and 26.06 mins, whilst there was a fine performance from an athlete with strong connections to the Tywyn area as Gwen Jones came home in a time of 28.51 mins to claim a pleasing 2nd placed finish within the female section of the event. Three locally affiliated athletes then finished within 4 seconds of each other as the Bro Dysynni duo of Alan Jones of Bryncrug & Richard Griffiths of Tywyn along with Meirionnydd athlete, Graeme Stringer of Llanelltyd came home in respective times of 30.44 mins, 30.45 mins and 30.48 mins. A further quartet of Meirionnydd athletes followed, as Nich Bradley of Dolgellau crossed the finishing line in a time of 33.16 mins, to be followed by Gareth Evans, Nicola Rees and Sandra Williams who came home in times of 34.10 mins, 35.05 mins and 35.50 mins. Completing the locally affiliated turnout was Adele Powl-Jones of Bryncrug, the Dysynni athlete home in 37.48 mins.

Elsewhere recently, Meirionnydd R.C. athlete Glyn Griffin added another Welsh international cap to his collection as he was chosen as part of the team to represent the Principality at the World Long Distance Mountain Running Challenge held in the town of Szlarska Poreba in the south west of Poland. The Llanfrothen based athlete was one of a team of six representing Wales, with his time of 3hrs 58.01 mins claiming an overall 40th spot finishing berth at the event as well as being the 4th Welsh athlete home. In the team event, Wales claimed an outstanding bronze medal behind Italy and the Czech Republic and ahead of the 4th placed USA team.

There was further national recognition also recently for Brenda Jones of Llanelltyd, as the Bro Dysynni A.C. athlete claimed victory within the Female Over-70 category at the 2013 Welsh National 5k Road Running Champioships, which were incorporated within the Llanelli 5k event, in a time of 27.51 mins.

Harlech based athlete Andy Unwin also recently completed his trilogy of races on the Philippine island of Cebu, the Bro Dysynni athlete beaming as he crossed the line at the R399 6k Road Race held in Cebu City in a time of 40.48 mins.

Another Bro Dysynni athlete in action recently was Gavin Griffiths, who completed the Murder Mile race held in Newbridge, South Wales. In a race regarded as one of the toughest uphill miles in the country, the athlete with strong Tywyn connections completed the event strongly in a time of 13.51 mins.

Finally, Meirionnydd R.C. athlete Dave Parker was in action at the recent Ponderosa Hill Race held at the Horseshoe Pass near Llangollen, the Wrexham based athlete completing the 4 mile course which included 950 feet of climbing in a time of 27.58 mins to claim an excellent 4th placed finish at the event.
