Wintry conditions greeted the eleven local athletes who headed to Llandudno last Sunday lunchtime to compete in the Nick Beer 10k Road Race, an event starting and finishing in the coastal resort with the course taking in the breath-taking and challenging climb around the Great Orme.

An excellent field of 563 competitors took on the challenge, and they were led home by Nick Swinburn (Morpeth), setting a course record for the event as he claimed a comfortable victory in a time of 30.34mins.

Leading home the local contingent was the first of the seven Meirionnydd Running Club athletes in action, as Kevin Jones of Dolgellau came home in an impressive time of 40.29mins. Also impressing was his club-mate, Frankie Vaughan of Ganllwyd, home in a time of 44.43mins, giving him much optimism for future events. Next home, in an all-to-rare competitive outing, was Paula Tunnadine of Barmouth, now affiliated to Wrecsam Tri Club, who completed the challenge in a time 45.44mins to claim runners up spot within the Female Over-40 category of the event.

Four further Meirionnydd Running Club athletes then followed, namely John Smith and Juliet Edwards of Dolgellau, home in respective times of 48.08mins & 48.41mins and the Llanellted-based duo of a rejuvanated Graeme Stringer and Robert Thomas, home in respective times of 50.03mins and 53.25mins.

The two Bro Dysynni athletes in action were led home by club debutant, John Tee of Blaenau Ffestiniog, home in 55.02mins, whilst Sioned Jones of Dolgellau followed, the Meirionnydd runner completing the event in 55.17mins.

There was an excellent performance from Emma Davies of Dolgellau, her spin-biking prowess paying dividends as she came home in 58.01mins whilst the eleven were completed by the remarkable Sheila Symonds, also of Dolgellau, the Bro Dysynni athlete claiming runners up spot in the Female Over-70 category as she came home in a time of 1hr 23.32mins.

The strong turn-out by the male section of Meirionnydd Running Club also saw them gather an 11th spot finish in the Male Team Event.
