Alex Lanz on his way to a 28th spot finish in Bangor
Treborth Fields in Bangor was the venue recently for the opening fixture of the 2012/13 Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross Country League and having claimed runners-up spot in Division 1 last season, the Senior Men's team of Meirionnydd Running Club made their intentions clear as they started off with a strong performance in the event hosted by Eryri Harriers.

Leading home the strong Meirionnydd contingent and claiming an overall 13th place finish was Ifan Richards, the Brithdir based athlete home in a time of 38.53mins. A mere 7 seconds seperated the next two Meirionnydd finishers as Glyn Griffin of Llanfrothen led home Dave Parker in respective times of 40.50mins & 40.57mins. There was an excellent 28th spot finish from Alex Lanz of Dolgellau, moving up this season into the senior category, in a time of 41.37mins with fellow Dolgellau athlete, Kevin Jones, following in 42.39mins, a time which also claimed 2nd spot within the Male Over-50 category at the event. Dylan Jones of Aberdyfi then followed in a time of 43.10mins with Clive Edgington next home in 44.25mins, clear of Alan Jones of Ffestiniog, crossing the finish line in a time of 46.06mins. Jamie Evans of Bryncrug continued the Meirionnydd procession in a time of 46.37mins with Dai Whittey of Llanelltyd showing much gumption to finish in a time of 47.30mins. Ricky Francis of Talyllyn came home on 48.57mins, ahead of Dolgellau based Arfon Hughes, home in a pleasing 51.49mins. The Meirionnydd team was completed by Alun Steadman of Aberdyfi finishing in a time of 57.03mins and Dai Rice of Dolgellau, home in 57.51mins. The large field also included a sole athlete affiliated to Bro Dysynni as John Nolan made a welcome return to competitive cross country action, completing the course in a time of 59.54mins.

After the 1st of the season's 5 fixtures, Meirionnydd sit in 2nd spot in Divison 1, with Bro Dysynni holding 15th spot in the second tier.

In the Senior Women's race, a trio of veterans carried the flag for Bro Dysynni A.C. Leading home the three was Brenda Jones of Llanelltyd, a time of 37.35mins claiming victory within the Female Over-70 category. Following on was Yolanda Marconi, a time of 39.21mins claiming 2nd spot within the Female Over-60 category with Marj Griffiths of Aberystwyth following as a time of 47.16mins claimed 2nd spot within the Female Over-65 section.

After the 1st fixture of the season, the Dysynni ladies sit comfortably in 7th spot in Division 2.

The day after the Bangor cross country event, two athletes from Meirionnydd who had been in action the previous day took to the hills, their chosen event being the 6.7 mile Arenig Fawr Fell Race, an event which also included an overall 1,900 feet of climbing. In a race which finished at the now disused Arenig Quarry, there was an excellent 3rd placed finish from Dave Parker in a time of 1hr 00.41mins with Ifan Richards turning in a rare below par performance as he came home in a time of 1hr 22.50mins.

Finally, Juliet Edwards of Dolgellau represented Meirionnydd Running Club at the recent MBNA Chester Marathon, completing the 26.2 mile course in a splendid time of 3hrs 51.39mins which also set a new club record for the distance within the Female Over-50 category.
