Brenda Jones seen on her way to age category success at the Red Kite Challenge.

Nant Yr Arian, 12 miles east of Aberystwyth, was the venue recently for the Red Kite Challenge, an 11 mile trail running event which included approximately 2,000 feet of climbing over the distance of the course. The event had added significance this year as it was also the 1st counter within the Welsh Trail Running Championships and also incorporated the 2012 UK / Welsh Senior Trail Running Championships. The event attracted the interest of five locally affiliated athletes and they were led home by Ifan Richards of Brithdir, the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete completing the course in a time of 1hr 15.12mins and claiming a 5th placed finish in the process. Club colleague, Glyn Griffin of Penrhyndeudraeth followed as a time of 1hr 20.58mins claimed an excellent 10th placed finish whilst a herculean effort by Richard Griffiths of Tywyn claimed 3rd spot within the Male Over-60 category, the Bro Dysynni athlete home in a time of 1hr 50.14mins. Also claiming age category success was Brenda Jones of Llanelltyd, the Bro Dysynni veteran claiming victory within the Female Over-70 category in an excellent time of 2hrs 12.50mins. The final locally affiliated athlete in action was Alex Lanz of Dolgellau, the Meirionnydd runner claiming an overall 5th placed finish within the Under-18's race.

One athlete apiece from Meirionnydd & Bro Dysynni were also in action recently at the Maldwyn Harriers organised Newtown 10k Road Race. Representing Meirionnydd was Ricky Francis, the Talyllyn based athlete completing the course in a time of 43.52mins whilst John Butler of Tywyn was the Bro Dysynni representative and, in an all to rare racing appearance, completed the course in 63.12mins.

Finally, one further local athlete in action was Mark Atherton of Llan Ffestiniog who headed to Denbighshire recently for the Llangynhafal Loop Fell Race, a 4.7 mile event which included an overall 1,750 feet of climbing. It was a case of 'all the fours' for the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete who claimed an overall 4th placed finish at the event in a time of 44.44mins.
