Jude Evans of Bryncrug in action at Oswestry

After building up a commanding lead in Division 2 of the Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross Country League over the course of the first four fixtures of the season, the 'Senior Men's' team affiliated to Meirionnydd Running Club confirmed their promotion to the top tier of North Wales cross country running after the final league fixture of the season held at Oswestry recently.

Promotion was confirmed after the 5th and final fixture of the season held over an undulating course at 'The Marches School' in Oswestry with conditions being soft underfoot as well having to deal with inclement weather conditions of strong rain and high winds.

Leading home the 10 strong Meirionnydd senior male was contingent was Ifan Richards of Brithdir home in 38.27mins a mere 10 seconds ahead of team-mate, Darren Cole of Dinas Mawddwy, home in 38.37mins. A quartet of Dolgellau-based athletes followed, namely Adam Preston, Tom Roberts, Kevin Jones & Dave Seabourne in respective times of 41.03mins, 41.10mins, 42.23mins & 46.19mins. Dylan Evans of Bryncrug was the next Meirionnydd finisher in 46.52mins, before Tony Hodgson of Llanelltyd, Frankie Vaughan of Ganllwyd and Pete Nicholls of Llanfachreth completed another excelllent club turnout, in times of 47.22mins (1st Male Over-60), 48.18mins & 49.45mins.

Promotion was confirmed soon afterwards by a convincing margin of 178 points over 2nd placed Oswestry Olympians, meaning the 'Senior Men's' team will perform amongst the elite during the 2011/12 campaign. As an added bonus, Kevin Jones claimed 3rd place in the Male Over-45 section over the course of the season whilst Ifan Richards was placed equal fifth in the Open Category.

The senior men's team of Bro Dysynni A.C. endured another disappointing campaign, finishing in 16th spot in Division 2.

Meirionnydd also had two athletes in action in the Under-17 Men's Race in Oswestry, Alex Lanz of Dolgellau claiming a 5th spot finish in a time of 20.58mins ahead of team-mate, Dylan Evans of Bryncrug, 7th overall in a time of 22.17mins.

In the Female Race, Meirionnydd had 5 competitors with Bro Dysynni having 1 athlete in action. The Meirionnydd contingent were led home by Andrea Vaughan of Ganllwyd in a time of 25.19mins, ahead of the Dolgellau-duo of Juliet Edwards & Janet Preston, home in respective times of 27.14mins & 28.49mins. Next home for Meirionnydd was Jude Cole of Dinas Mawddwy in 29.52mins with team-mate, Jude Evans of Bryncrug, following in 31.49mins. The Bro Dysynni athlete in action was the evergreen Brenda Jones of Llanelltyd, victorious in the Female Over-60's section in an excellent time of 31.56mins.

The final Division 2 League standings saw Meirionnydd ladies finish in an overall 6th place, with their Bro Dysynni counterparts following in 13th spot. Dysynni did however have the satisfaction of seeing Brenda Jones claim victory in the Female Over-60 category over the course of the 5 race series.
