The grounds of the Marches School in Oswestry was recently the venue for the fifth and final fixture of the 2011-12 Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross Country League, a fixture which was the culmination of an excellent first season in the top division of the league for the men's team affiliated to Meirionnydd Running Club.

On this occasion, a total of nine senior male athletes from Meirionnydd were in action, the nine being led home by Welsh international runner, Ifan Richards of Brithdir, claiming an overall 13th placed finish in a time of 34.44mins. Ever improving club colleague, Glyn Griffin of Penrhyndeudraeth, followed in a time of 36.17mins, clear of club colleagues Adam Preston of Dolgellau & Mark Atherton of Llan Ffestiniog, finishing in respective times of 37.43mins & 38.10mins. Clive Edgington of Arthog followed, completing an impressive 1st season for Meirionnydd as he finished in a time of 39.14mins. The quartet of Dylan Evans of Bryncrug, Ricky Francis of Talyllyn and the Dolgellau duo of Arfon Hughes & John Smith completed the Meirionnydd turn-out, home in respective times of 41.32mins, 42.51mins, 43.43mins & 47.13mins.

In the Male Under-17 section, solid performances were produced by Alex Lanz of Dolgellau, 4th overall in a time of 19.27mins, and Jamie Evans of Bryncrug, claiming a 6th placed finish in 20.35mins.

A further quartet of athletes affiliated to Meionnydd were also in action within the Senior Female event. Leading home the quartet was Andrea Vaughan of Ganllwyd in a time of 23.29mins, with just under 2 minutes seperating the remaining trio, namely Janet Peston of Dolgellau, home in 27.55mins, Jude Evans of Bryncrug, home in 28.55mins & Emma Davies of Dolgellau, in a rare cross country outing, home in 29.54mins.

As the dust settles on the 2011-12 season, the final standings make for impressive reading, particularly from a Meirionnydd Running Club perspective. Within the Senior Male Team category, Meirionnydd claimed 2nd spot within Division 1, with Bro Dysynni claiming a tie for 16th spot in Division 2. Within the Senior Ladies Team category, Meirionnydd claimed 4th spot in Division 2, ahead of Bro Dysynni, who claimed an overall 10th spot within the same division.

There were also some noteworthy individual performances within the final standings from local athletes, not least from Bro Dysynni's Brenda Jones, claiming overall age category victory over the course of the season within the Female Over-70 section. For Meirionnydd, John Smith claimed an overall 2nd spot within the Male Over-60 category, with Kevin Jones of Dolgellau claiming a tie for 2nd spot within the Male Over-45 section. Two further athletes at the opposite ends of the age spectrum also claimed 3rd spot within their respective categories, namely Alex Lanz within the Male Under-17 section & Clive Edgington in the Male Over-55 category.
