Autumn sunshine greeted the 83 athletes who headed to Llanfachreth, near Dolgellau, last Saturday afternoon for the 10th running of the Rhobell Fawr Fell Race. Facing the competitors was a 6.4 mile course which included an overall 1,900 feet of climbing.

The race was dominated by athletes affiliated to Mercia Fell Runners who claimed four of the top ten spaces, including the first two finishers, namely Tim Davies, home in 51.27mins, a mere five seconds ahead of club colleague, Paul Jones, who finished in 51.32mins.

The race also attracted a total of nine locally affiliated athletes and they were led home by Dave Parker, the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete claiming a fine fourth placed finish in a time of 53.36mins. A further four Meirionnydd athletes followed, in the guise of Alan Jones of Blaenau Ffestiniog, home in 64.40mins, Dave Elliott of Machynlleth, home in 64.54mins and the Dolgellau-based duo of Arfon Hughes & Juliet Edwards in respective times of 66.50mins & 75.31mins, the latter claiming 2nd spot within the Female Over-50 age category, as well as establishing a new Meirionnydd age category record over the Rhobell course within the Female Over-50 section.

Richard Griffiths was the first of the two Bro Dysynni A.C. finishers, the Tywyn based athlete home in a time of 76.10mins, clear of the Meirionnydd duo of Kevin Evans of Brithdir & Dai Rice of Dolgellau, home in respective times of 82.43mins & 90.24mins. The locally affiliated contingent was completed by Bob Chilton of Hermon, the Bro Dysynni athlete continuing his comeback from injury as he crossed the finishing line in a time of 93.52mins.
