St. David's College in Llandudno was the venue recently for the 2nd fixture of the 2013/14 North Wales Cross Country League with a total of ten locally affiliated athletes in action at the event.

In the Senior Men's Race, a total of seven athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd Running Club were in competitive action, the seven being led home by Ifan Richards, the Brithdir based athlete claiming an overall 11th placed finish in a time of 34.13 mins. Alex Lanz of Dolgellau was the 2nd Meirionnydd finisher, 21st overall in a time of 35.19 mins with colleagues Dave Parker and Glyn Griffin of Llanfrothen finishing in close proximity in respective times of 35.24 mins and 35.28 mins. Alan Jones of Ffestiniog turned in a respectable performance to come home in a time of 39.31 mins with Clive Edgington of Friog and Elfyn Hughes of Ffestiniog completing the Meirionnydd turnout in times of 40.30 mins and 42.03 mins. As a result of the above, Meirionnydd climbed one place to an overall 5th spot in Division 1 of the mens league with a further three fixtures remaining.

A trio of Bro Dysynni athletes saw action in the Senior Ladies event, the trio being led home by Marit Evans of Dolgellau in a time of 27.05 mins. Yolanda Marconi-Nolan was the 2nd Dysynni finisher in a time of 31.44 mins whilst the dependable Marj Griffiths of Aberystwyth completed the Dysynni turnout in a time of 32.48 mins. As a result of the above, Bro Dysynni slipped one spot to an overall 9th place in Division 2 of the ladies league, again with three fixtures remaining.

A further 9 locally affiliated athletes took to the road recently, their chosen event being the Spillane & Co. Wealth Management Abergele 5 Mile Road Race, an event which also incorporated the North Wales Championships over the said distance. The first seven of the locally affiliated competitors all wore the vest of Meirionnydd R.C., with the Dolgellau duo of Tom Roberts and Alex Lanz leading home their club colleagues in respective times of 29.37 mins and 29.38 mins to claim overall 10th and 11th spot finishing positions, the former claiming 3rd Senior Male in the North Wales Championships, the latter claiming overall victory within the Male Under-20 category. A busy Clive Edgington followed, as a time of 32.38 mins claimed an overall 2nd spot within the Male Over-55 category, clear of colleagues Arfon Hughes of Dolgellau, Graeme Stringer of Llanelltyd and Ieuan Jones who followed home in respective times of 34.15 mins, 36.59 mins and 41.10 mins. The Meirionnydd contingent was completed by Alison Smedley, the Dolgellau-based athlete turning in a pleasing performance to complete the course in a time of 42.53 mins. Two Bro Dysynni athletes also saw competitive action in Abergele as John Tee of Blaenau Ffestiniog came home in 46.48 mins whilst the biggest cheer of the afternoon was reserved for Sheila Symonds, the redoubtable Dolgellau based athlete claiming victory in the Female Over-80 age category in a time of 76.26 mins.

Two athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd also took to the hills recently as they headed to Cilcain, near Mold, the venue for the Clwydian Hills Fell Race, a 9 mile event which also included an overall 3,000 feet of elevation. Alan Jones of Ffestiniog led home the duo in action in a time of 1 hr 29.42 mins with Juliet Edwards following in a time of 1 hr 45.45 mins, a time good enough to not only claim age category victory on the day for the Dolgellau based athlete but, as the event was also the last fixture in the North Wales Fell Running Championships, overall victory in the series was also claimed within the Female Over-50 age group.

Bro Dysynni A.C. were represented recently at the Cwmbran Bog and Bryn Challenge held in South Wales as Gavin Griffiths, erstwhile of Tywyn, completed the 13 mile multi-terrain challenge in a time of 3 hrs 04.29 mins in an event which attracted a total of 183 competitors.

To complete a busy period, Jeff Davies of Meirionnydd R.C. was in action in Gloucestershire recently, completing the Tewkesbury Guy Fawkes 5 Mile Race in a time of 34.02 mins to claim age category victory within the Male Over-65 section.
