Cartmel in Cumbria was the venue recently for the 3rd annual running of the Cartmel 18k Trail Race, with the event run predominantly over footpaths and bridleways attracting the interest of a dozen athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd Running Club.

 

Leading home the local twelve in action was Adam Preston of Dolgellau, claiming an excellent 8th placed finishing spot overall, as he crossed the finishing line in a time of 1hr 21.27mins. Claiming an overall 14th placed finish was Jamie Evans of Bryncrug in a time of 1hr 26.56mins, a time which also claimed victory within the Male Under-18 category at the event. Other Meirionnydd finishers in the Lakeland trail race were the Dolgellau duo of John Smith & Janet Preston, home in respective times of 1hr 48.09mins & 1hr 55.27mins. Kevin Evans of Brithdir was the next of the local finishers in a time of 1hr 57.05mins, a mere 4 seconds ahead of Gaenor Smith of Dolgellau, home in 1hr 57.09mins. Two further Dolgellau-based athletes followed, with Margaret Roberts coming home in 2hrs 03.53mins ahead of Jonathan Lloyd who followed in a time of 2hrs 15.17mins.Heidi Roden of Arthog & Mandy Price of Brithdir crossed the line together in a time of 2hrs 20.17mins before Alun Jones of Dolgellau & Tracey Evans of Brithdir completed the excellent Meirionnydd turnout as they came home in respective times of 2hrs 31.40mins & 2hrs 46.03mins.

 

One Meirionnydd athlete who took on an even longer challenge last weekend was Jude Evans who headed to Sussex to take part in the Brighton Marathon. Glorious sunshine made for difficult conditions for the athletes taking on the 42.2k challenge, albeit the Bryncrug-based athlete rose to the challenge as she came home in an excellent time of 5hrs 05.14mins.

 

Two local athletes were also in action at the 1st race of the annual Joe Brown 18th Midweek Race Series organised by Eryri Harriers. Moel Tryfan was the venue for the first of the ten race series and, in a race measuring 3 miles and including 340 feet of climbing, there was a pleasing 4th placed finish on his return from injury for Ifan Richards of Brithdir, the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete home in 19.04mins, one place and twelve seconds ahead of Dylan Jones of Aberdyfi, as the Bro Dysynni AC athlete came home in 19.16mins.

 

Cae Peips in Blaenau Ffestiniog will be awash with activity this coming Saturday afternoon for the annual Ras Y Moelwyn Fell Race. The main race is due off at 2.00pm although their will be festivities at the field between 1.00pm and 5.00pm.
