Gloomy, overcast conditions greeted the athletes who travelled to Abergynolwyn last Saturday lunchtime, the venue for the Railway Inn sponsored Tarren Hendre Fell Race, a 6 mile event which included a total of some 2,000 feet of climbing. The race was also the second of the three counters towards the 2013 Meirionnydd Winter Race Series as well as being the 1st race within the WFRA 2013 North Wales series (sponsored by Cotswold Outdoor). As such, the race attracted a high calibre field.

The gloomy conditions which greeted the athletes resulted in mist falling on the higher parts of the race, resulting in difficult navigational conditions with a number of athletes straying off the best racing line.

Having achieved a 5th placed finish at the event in 2012 and a 3rd placed finish in 2010, the 2013 race winner was Martin Cliffe of Eryri Harriers, who completed the course in a time of 53.36 mins to claim a comfortable victory, a little over 3 minutes clear of the next finisher. In the ladies race, there was a repeat victory for Lauren Jeska of Aberystwyth A.C. who, having won the ladies race in 2012, repeated her success in 2013 in a time of 59.26 mins.

The race attracted a total of eight athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd R.C., the eight being led home by Dave Parker, claiming an excellent 3rd placed finish in a time of 56.44 mins. Ifan Richards of Brithdir followed, as a time of 57.22 mins ensured a 6th placed finish, whilst Alex Lanz of Dolgellau claimed an overall 9th place, as well as 2nd Junior Male in a pleasing time of 58.27 mins. Fresh from his success at the English Indoor Rowing Championships, Jamie Evans of Bryncrug produced another fine performance, finishing in a time of 66.07 mins, a mere 15 seconds ahead of Dolgellau athlete, Arfon Hughes, who followed home in 66.22 mins. There was age category success for the next Meirionnydd finisher, as Juliet Edwards of Dolgellau claimed victory within the Female Over-50 category in a time of 74.55 mins, with Tony Hodgson of Llanelltyd and Kevin Evans of Brithdir following in respective times of 75.20 mins & 83.04 mins.

There was also recent continued success a little further afield for an athlete with strong ties to both the Barmouth area and to Bro Dysynni.A.C. The athlete in question, Alun Williams, was recently victorious at the Southern Sports Podiatry 10k Trail Race, held as part of the Paradise Triathlon festivities held in the Glenorchy area of the South Island of New Zealand. Victory over the scenic course was attained in a creditable time of 37.03mins.
