A total of 9 local athletes represented their respective local clubs at the UK Short Course, Welsh Seniors & Masters Trail Running Championships which were held at Ponterwyd near Aberystwyth recently.

The weekend of racing consisted of 3 events. Saturday saw Sialens Y Barcud Coch, an 11 mile trail running event which included a total of 2,530 feet of climbing. Also on the Saturday was the 4 mile Junior Race, whilst Sunday saw the gruelling 18 mile Ras Y Diafol take place.

A total of 6 locally affiliated athletes took on Sialens Y Barcud Coch with Ifan Richards of Brithdir leading home the contingent, the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete placing 6th overall in a time of 1hr 17.28mins. There was a 'battle royale' as a mere 34 seconds seperated the next three local finishers, with the Bro Dysynni duo of Dylan Jones of Aberdyfi & Dewi Roberts of Blaenau Ffestiniog finishing in times of 1hr 23.19mins & 1hr 23.53mins and sandwiched in-between them was Tom Roberts of Dolgellau, the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete crossing the line in a time of 1hr 23.20mins. After a break from competitive action, their was a dynamic return for John D. Smith of Dolgellau, the Meirionnydd R.C. athlete claiming victory and gold medal status in the Over-60 category of the Welsh Championships as he crossed the line in a terrific time of 1hr 47.52mins. The Meirionnydd R.C. quartet in action on the day were completed by Victor Gretton, home in a time of 2hrs 15.32mins. Two local juniors claimed 1st & 2nd in the Male Under-17 race which covered a distance of 4 miles. Leading home the duo was the ever-improving Alex Lanz of Dolgellau, the Meirionnydd R.C. runner home in 21.27mins whilst his Bro Dysynni counter-part, Dion Roberts of Blaenau Ffestiniog, crossed the line in 22.58mins.


John D. Smith on his was to Welsh Championship gold in the Male Over-60 category at Sialens Y Barcud Coch.
The following day 2 local athletes braved the challenge presented by Ras Y Diafol. Having completed Sialens Y Barcud Coch the previous day, Dewi Roberts was one of 22 competitors who took on both races over the course of the weekend. Showing little effect from the prevous days exertions, the Ffestiniog-based athlete covered the terrain in a time of 2hrs 15.23mins to claim a 7th placed finish on the day and overall 5th placed out of 22 in the cumulative two race series. Also taking on Ras Y Diafol and claiming age category success in the Male Over-65 category was John Marsh of Tywyn, the Tarren Hendre athlete coming home in a very impressive time of 2hrs 37.18mins.
