Tom Roberts tackling the 13k ridge run in Lanzarote.

A contingent of locally affiliated athletes, as well as a large group of supporters, recently made their annual trip to the Canary Island of Lanzarote which played host to the International Running Challenge, a four race event run over four consecutive days. Facing the athletes were the Clasica de Lanzarote (10k Road Race), a 13k Ridge Run, a 5k Beach Run before the final event, the 21k La vuelta de Tinajo. Two athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd Running Club completed all four events, namely Tom Roberts of Dolgellau, who also had the honour of age category victory within the Male 20-24 age group as he completed the challenge in an overall time of 3hrs 03.37 mins (37.31 mins for the 10k, 48.03 mins for the 13k, 20.35 mins for the 5k and 1 hr 17.28 mins for the 21k) and Adam Preston, also of Dolgellau, completing the challenge in an overall time of 3 hrs 41.55 mins. Graeme Stringer of Llanelltyd succumbed to injury after completing three of the events, namely the 10k in 49.02 mins, the 13k in 1 hr 03.29 mins and the 5k in 30.00 mins. Fellow Meirionnydd athlete, Rob Thomas completed two events, the Llanelltyd runner finishing the 10k in 1hr 01.56 mins and the 13k in 1 hr 15.26 mins. Representing Bro Dysynni A.C. at the Challenge was Huw Harrsion, the Fairbourne based athlete delighted to finish the 10k event in a time of 1 hr 07.12 mins.

On the domestic front, Ysgol Morgan Llwyd in Wrexham recently played host to the 3rd fixture within the 2013-14 Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross Country League. As has become the norm this season, Meirionnydd were represented within the male fixture with Bro Dysynni following suit within the female fixture. In the Senior Men's event, a total of seven athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd were in action, the seven being led home by Ifan Richards, the Brithdir based competitor claiming an overall 24th spot finish in a time of 32.07 mins. Alex Lanz of Dolgellau was the next Meirionnydd finisher in a time of 32.26 mins, 40 seconds clear of colleague, Dave Parker, who finished in 33.06 mins. Alan Jones of Blaenau Ffestiniog followed in 35.08 mins with the Meirionnydd contingent being completed by Arfon Hughes of Dolgellau, Elfyn Hughes of Blaenau Ffestiniog and Ricky Francis of Talyllyn who finished in respective times of 37.47 mins, 38.01 mins and 39.59 mins. As a result of another solid team performance, Meironnydd climbed one place up to 4th place in Division 1 with two fixtures remaining.

In the Senior Ladies event, Bro Dysynni were represented by two of their stalwart performers. Brenda Jones of Llanelltyd claimed victory within the Female Over-70 category, finishing in a time of 29.20 mins, whilst Marj Griffiths of Aberystwyth claimed 2nd spot within the Female Over-65 section, home in 32.30 mins. In a very congested 2nd Division, the above led to Bro Dysynni climbing 3 spots, from 9th up to 6th with two league fixtures remaining.
