The organisers of two local races can feel justifiably pleased with the large entry of runners received for the respective races held recently.

Firstly, the Dolgellau 5 Mile Road Race attracted an entry of 72 athletes for the event which was held as part of the Hwyl Yr Haf festivities. In a race which attracted a large number of both locally affiliated and unaffiliated athletes, there was delight as one of the locally affiliated runners led home the field to claim victory by a convincing 35 seconds. The athlete in question, Alex Lanz of Dolgellau, came home on a time of 29.12 mins, leading home a plethora of athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd Running Club. The second Meirionnydd finisher was Clive Edgington of Friog, claiming an overall 11th spot finish in a time of 32.15 mins. Bro Dysynni A.C. were also well represented at the event, and their first finisher was Eifion Roberts, the Harlech based athlete home in a time of 34.23 mins to claim age category victory within the Male Over-50 section. With local competitors to numerous to mention in one report, special mention must be given to the local quintet of Gwenan Meirion, Wendy Rogers, Karen Roberts, Emma Williams & Llinos Rowlands, the team known as 'Dyls Babes' coming home in respective times of 46.20 mins, 49.24 mins, 49.24 mins, 57.33 mins & 1hr 07.05mins. Mention also must be given to Esyllt Richards of Brithdir, normally seen behind the camera lens at running events, on this occasion completing the course in a time of 1hr 29.32 mins.

The second local event held recently was Ras Hendre Wallog, an approximate 3 mile trail race held in and around Abergynolwyn. In a midweek race which attracted an excellent entry of 48 athletes, overall victory was gained by Austin Blackburn of Severn A.C. in an excellent time of 17.29 mins. Clive Edgington continued his recent busy racing schedule as he claimed runners up spot at the event in a time of 19.20 mins, a mere two seconds clear of Tom Jones of Aberdyfi, the first of a large turnout of Bro Dysynni A.C. athletes at the event, home in 19.22 mins. Huw Jones of Abergynolwyn was the first Junior Under-18 to finish, 4th overall in 19.48 mins, 20 seconds ahead of George Richards of Tywyn, 2nd Under-18 finisher in a time of 21.08 mins. Adele Powl-Jones of Bryncrug led home the Senior Female contingent at the event, the Bro Dysynni A.C. athlete home in a time of 26.40 mins. Special mention should also be given to the large number of junior athletes in action at the event from Abergynolwyn, Llanegryn and Tywyn, their performances auger well for the future of local athletics.

Finally, two locally affiliated athletes were also in action at the recent Race The Train 5k event held in Caernarfon. Representing Meirionnydd R.C. was Ricky Francis of Talyllyn who completed the course in an excellent time of 19.22 mins, whilst representing Bro Dysynni A.C. was Geraint Evans, the Porthmadog based athlete crossing the finishing line strongly in a time of 23.30 mins.

There is further train racing action this coming Saturday (17th August) as Tywyn will host the 30th edition of 'Race the Train'. Details relating to the event can be found on the race website at www.racethretrain.com
