Two locally affiliated athletes recently took part in the Snowdonia Marathon, an event recognised as one of the toughest 26.2 mile race challenges around.

 

First home was Glyn Rowlands of Dolgellau, the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete just breaking the 4 hour barrier as he crossed the line in 3hrs 59.19mins with Rhian Jones of Aberdyfi following, the Bro Dysynni athlete jubilant with her finishing time of 4hrs 16.50mins.

 

For the 2nd fixture in succession, Meirionnydd RC athletes were out in force, as Treborth Fields in Bangor played host to the 2nd fixture of the season of the Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross Country League. Leading home the 9 strong Meirionnydd squad in the Senior Male Event was Ifan Richards of Brithdir, 9th overall in a time of 29.58mins. Team-mates following at regular intervals included Tom Roberts of Dolgellau in 31.33mins, Huw Brassington of Bont Ddu in 32.05mins and the Dolgellau based duo of Kevin Jones & Adam Preston in respective times of 32.14mins & 33.12mins. A resurgent Tony Hodgson followed, the Llanelltyd-based athlete home in 36.56mins, just ahead of Ricky Francis of Tal-y-Llyn who followed in 37.05mins. Frankie Vaughan of Ganllwyd was next home in 37.58mins, ahead of Arwel Evans of Porthmadog, representing Aberystwyth University, finishing his inaugural league event in a respectable 39.41mins. Kevin Evans of Brithdir completed the Meirionnydd turnout as he came home in 39.46mins with Richard Griffiths of Tywyn following, the sole Bro Dysynni competitor in the male event, crossing the line in 40.27mins.

 

There were also two useful 4th placed finishes for Meirionnydd athletes in two age category races covering a wide age spectrum. In the Male Over-70 event Barrie Jackson of Bala came home in 32.00mins whilst in the Male Under-17 section, Alex Lanz of Dolgellau placed well with a finishing time of 19.32mins.

 

After 2 of the seasons 5 fixtures, Meirionnydd RC mens team now head Division 2 by a large margin, indeed, their current points tally would position them in 3rd place in Division 1 after two events.

 

In the Ladies Race, their was an excellent league debut for an athlete with strong Porthmadog connections as Alaw Beynon-Thomas, representing Aberystwyth University, claimed runners-up spot in a time of 20.17mins. A quartet of Meirionnydd athletes then followed, namely Andrea Vaughan of Ganllwyd in 24.35mins, Judith Cole of Dinas Mawddwy in 26.44mins with the Dolgellau duo of Janet Preston and Gaenor Smith following in respective times of 28.29mins & 30.13mins. They, in turn, were followed by the Dysynni duo of Brenda Jones & Marit Evans, the Llanelltyd athlete leading home the Dolgellau athlete in times of 30.40mins & 31.00mins. The local contingent were completed by two further Meirionnydd RC competitors as Sioned Jones of Ganllwyd & Nia Medi of Dolgellau crossed the line in times of 31.06mins & 36.14mins.

 

After two fixtures within the female competition, Meirionnydd RC currently hold on to 5th place in Division 2 with their Dysynni counterparts following in 13th spot.

 

There is local action this coming Saturday as Llanfachreth will play host to the 6 mile Rhobell Fawr Fell Race, an event which also includes an overall 1,900 feet ascent. The event, which is due off at 12.00 Noon is also the first 'counter' of the three race 'Meirionnydd Winter Race Series'. The event will also incorporate a three mile Junior / Beginners Fell Race due off at 12.10pm.
