News Report 7th August 2011

Warm and muggy conditions greeted the 71 athletes who lined up for the start of the W.D. Pugh & Sons Ltd. sponsored Dolgellau 5 Mile Road Race recently, an event now firmly established as one of the quicker 5 mile events held in North Wales.

As ever, the race attracted strong local representation as well as attracting a number of athletes who had travelled from further afield to compete. It was one of the travelling contingent who eventually claimed a relatively comfortable victory as Tim Davies of Maldwyn Harriers crossed the finishing line in a time of 26.39mins, just under 30 seconds clear of the rest of the field. Victory in the Female category was also achieved by an athlete from slightly further afield, as Jay Jennions of Deestriders came home victorious in a time of 31.51mins.

Leading home the local contingent, claiming an overall 3rd place finish as well as victory in the 'Junior Male' category was Alex Lanz of Dolgellau, as a time of 29.05mins also represented a new Meirionnydd Running Club age category record over the distance. Another Dolgellau-based athlete affiliated to Meirionnydd Running Club followed as Tom Roberts claimed an overall 6th placed finish in a time of 30.06mins. It also proved to be a successful day for the more junior members of Meirionnydd Running Club as Jamie Evans of Bryncrug placed 16th in a time of 32.41mins. A further 5 athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd all came home with a little over a minute seperating their finishing times. Leading home the 5 was Arfon Hughes of Dolgellau in 34.34mins, just pipping Dylan Evans of Bryncrug, home in 34.36mins. Ricky Francis of Talyllyn followed in 34.59mins with the 5 being completed by Glyn Rowlands of Arthog & Pete Nicholls of Llanfachreth, home in respective times of 35.31mins & 35.55mins. Nich Bradley was the next Meirionnydd finisher, the Dolgellau-based runner home in 37.56mins before Lee Bell led home the Bro Dysynni contingent in action, the Tywyn-based athlete home in 38.08mins. The Brithdir based 'Father & Son' combination of Kevin & Danny Evans followed, the Meirionnydd R.C. duo home in times of 38.51mins & 40.42mins with John Tee of Blaenau Ffestiniog following, the 2nd Dysynni finisher home, in a time of 42.11mins. There was a strong performance from Emma Davies of Dolgellau, home on 44.36mins, clear of the Meirionnydd duo of Barrie Jackson of Bala & Haydn Fowler of Trawsfynydd who followed in times of 47.27mins & 49.27mins. The final locally affiliated athlete to finish was Marj Griffiths of Bro Dysynni, the Aberystwyth-based athlete setting a new course record within the Female Over-65 age category in an excellent 52.49mins. In addition to the large number of locally affiliated athletes in action, the race also attracted a good number of unattached local athletes, all of whom should be congratulated for their endeavours.
