Having reached the heights of 2nd spot in the top division of the Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross Country League after the first fixture of the season, another excellent turnout from the male section of Meirionnydd Running Club ensured that this position was further consolidated after the second fixture of the season held at St. David's College in Llandudno recently. The club were represented by a team of 12 in Llandudno, with 7 of those achieving top 50 placings. Leading home the Meirionnydd dozen, claiming a 19th spot finish overall was Ifan Richards of Brithdir in a time of 32.01mins. Five further Meirionnydd athletes then finished the course within one minute of each other, namely Huw Brassington of Bontddu in 33.12mins, Dylan Jones of Aberdyfi in 33.29mins, Glyn Griffin of Penrhyndeudraeth in 33.48mins and the Dolgellau duo of Kevin Jones & Adam Preston, home in respective times of 33.51mins & 33.59mins. Mark Atherton of Llan Ffestiniog was the final Meirionnydd runner to claim a top 50 spot, finishing in 49th position in 34.28mins. There was an excellent Meirionnydd debut for Clive Edgington of Friog, finishing strongly in 36.07mins, whilst a further trio of Meirionnydd athletes were seperated by a mere 5 seconds, the trio in question being Ricky Francis of Talyllyn, home in 38.27mins, Dylan Evans of Bryncrug, home in 38.29mins & Dave Seabourne of Dolgellau crossing the finishing line in 38.32mins. The Meirionnydd turnout was completed by another Dolgellau-based athlete, namely John Smith, who completed the event in 41.10mins. After two of the five league fixtures, the male team affiliated to Meirionnydd Running Club are firmly esconced in 2nd spot in Division 1 of the league, trailing Eryri Harriers whilst ahead of 3rd placed Telford AC. With the third fixture of the season being held at Northop this coming Saturday afternoon, another good turnout should further cement this position.

In the Junior Male event, there was another solid performance produced by Alex Lanz of Dolgellau, on this occasion claiming a 7th placed finish in a time of 18.09mins.

In the female race, a total of seven locally affiliated athletes were in action, 4 affiliated to Meirionnydd R.C. and 3 to Bro Dysynni A.C. The seven were led home by Andrea Vaughan of Ganllwyd, the Meirionnydd athlete finishing in a time of 22.32mins, just over half a minute clear of club colleague, Juliet Edwards of Dolgellau, who finished in 23.10mins. The Dysynni trio in action were led home by Brenda Jones of Llanelltyd, victorious within the Female Over-70 category, in a time of 28.02mins, with Jude Evans of Bryncrug behind the 3rd Meirionnydd finisher in a time of 29.03mins. Two Dolgellau athletes followed, with Marit Evans of Bro Dysynni home in 33.04mins, ahead of her Meirionnydd counterpart, Christine Owen, home in 33.48mins. The local turnout was completed by Marj Griffiths, the Aberystwyth based veteran athlete completing the event in a strong 34.11mins. After the 2nd league fixture within the female category, Meirionnydd lay in 6th spot in Division 2 with Bro Dysynni claiming an 11th spot within the same division.

There is local action this coming Sunday (13th) as Llanfachreth, near Dolgellau, will play host to the 9th running of the Rhobell Fawr Fell Race. The 6 mile race which also includes an overall 1,900 feet of climbing is due off at 12.00 Noon. Further details relating to the event are available at www.run-meirionnydd.co.uk
