News Report 6th July 2009

A Friday night visit to Shropshire was on the menu recently for 5 local athletes, their chosen venue being Gobowen, for the town's annual 5 mile road race.

The race was also the starting point for a busy 48 hours for three of the five competitors who would also be in competition at the Brecon 10 Mile Road Race on the Sunday. Two of those competing at both events led home the local contingent in Gobowen, as the Ganllwyd-based Meirionnydd Running Club duo of Frankie & Andrea Vaughan came home in respective times of 34.46mins & 35.47mins. They were followed by club-mate Graeme Stringer of Llanelltyd, home in 36.21mins whilst another of those competing at both events followed as Barrie Jackson of Bala completed the course in a time of 39.25mins, a time which claimed an excellent 3rd place finish in the Male Over-65 category for the Bro Dysynni A.C. veteran. The local contingent were completed by Sioned Jones of Brithdir, the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete finishing in a pleasing time of 42.45mins.

Three of the above then headed on to Brecon on the Sunday morning for the undulating 10 mile Brecon Road Race. Once again Frankie Vaughan led the local contingent home, on this occasion in a time of 1hr 15.10mins, he was duly followed by Andrea Vaughan in 1hr 18.07mins, whilst Barrie Jackson claimed 2nd spot in the Male Over-65 section as he completed the course in a time of 1hr 27.40mins.

A further 5 local competitors decided to head to the hills recently to compete at Y Garn Fell Race held in Rhyd Ddu. The 3 mile race which included 1,500 feet of climbing had added significance this year as it was also one of the events which constituted both the British Fell Running Championships as well as the Welsh counterpart.

In the senior races, an all-Meirionnydd Running Club quartet of athletes were in action, the four being led home by Mark Atherton of Llan Ffestiniog in a time of 34.33mins. Little seperated two Dolgellau-based athletes who followed as Juliet Edwards and Nich Bradley crossed the finish line in respective times of 44.18mins & 44.50mins. The quartet was completed by Victor Gretton, home on this occasion in a time of 53.20mins.

The junior event held at Y Garn was also the final counter towards the 2009 Welsh Fell Running Association 5 Race Snowdonia Series. Having been victorious in 2 of 4 previous races, Aaron Roberts of Blaenau Ffestiniog had to settle for 2nd place in the Under-12's category at Y Garn on this occasion, with a finishing time 9.46mins. This placed him in an overall 2nd placed position in the Under-12's section after the five events with a total of 34 points. This despite being considerably younger than some of the other competitors within the same age group.
