Dewi, Dion & Sheila in action at the Rhyl Sun Centre 5k

The lure of a fast time attracted 8 local athletes to Rhyl recently, their chosen event being the Rhyl Suncentre 5k Road Race, a race run on an out-and-back course along the town's promenade. Leading home the local contingent in a time of 17.30mins was Tom Roberts of Dolgellau, one of five Meirionnydd Running Club athletes in action on the evening, home in a time of 17.30mins. He, in turn, was followed by Dewi Roberts of Blaenau Ffestiniog, the first of the three Bro Dysynni AC competitors to finish, in a pleasing time of 17.46mins. A mere 4 seconds seperated the next local finishers, both Dolgellau-based athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd R.C., as Kevin Jones led home Alex Lanz in respective times of 18.01mins & 18.05mins, the latter claiming a 3rd placed finish in the Male Under-17 category. Also in that category was Dion Roberts of Blaenau Ffestiniog, the 2nd Dysynni finisher home in a time of 20.54mins, before three vastly more experienced athletes completed the local turnout, namely the Meirionnydd-duo of Barrie Jackson (Bala) & Malcolm Taylor (Criccieth) in times of 25.40mins & 28.17mins before the effervescent Sheila Symonds of Dolgellau crossed the line, the Bro Dysynni runner claiming gold in the North Wales Championship Female Over-75 category in a tremendous time of 40.54mins.

Shortly after the Rhyl event, Barrie Jackson was in action once again, on this occasion at the Mynydd Myfyr off-road hill run at Trefonen near Oswestry. On this occasion, there was also age category success for the Meirionnydd RC veteran who claimed victory in the Male Over-70 section in an excellent time of 32.19mins.

Prolific racer, Ifan Richards of Brithdir, was also in action recently as he was chosen as part of the North Wales team for the British Inter-Counties Fell Running Championships which were held in conjunction with Y Llety Fell Race at Moel Famau. Searing heat greeted the competitors in action at the 9.6mile event which also included 3,276 feet of climbing, the Meirionnydd RC athlete performing well on the day as he crossed the finishing line in a highly respectable 66th position, his finishing time being 1hr 32.40mins.

Much further afield, there was another strong performance from a past member of Bro Dysynni AC as Alun Williams, formerly of Barmouth, was one of 2,336 finishers at the Christchurch SBS Half Marathon held on the South Island of New Zealand. A finishing time of 1hr 12.32mins ensured an excellent 13th placed finish and also represented an improvement of over 2 and a half minutes from his finishing time at the 2009 event.
