A quartet of athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd Running Club headed to the Yorkshire Dales recently to form part of a field of around 1,000 athletes who had gathered to participate in the 56th running of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Fell Race. The 23.5 mile race which also included an overall 6,000 feet of climbing pushed the athletes to their limits as it took in the climbs of Pen Y Ghent, Whernside & Ingleborough. The quartet were led home by the impressive Ifan Richards, as the Brithdir based athlete claimed an excellent 23rd placed finish in a time of 3hrs 23.05mins. Continuing his impressive 1st year of competitive fell running was Glyn Griffin, the Penrhyndeudraeth based athlete claiming a strong 65th placed finish in a time of 3hrs 43.16mins. The Meirionnydd quartet was completed by the Dolgellau duo of Kevin Jones & Nich Bradley who came home in respective times of 4hrs 22.29mins & 5hrs 15.05mins.

A further quartet of athletes were also recently in action, their chosen event being the Wrexham Open 10 Mile Road Race, an event which also incorporated the 2012 North Wales 10 Mile Championships. An impressive statistic on the day was that all four local athletes in action made the championship podium within their respective age categories. The first of the quartet to finish was Jeff Davies, the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete claiming 2nd spot within the Male Over-60 category in a time of 1hr 10.31mins. A trio of Bro Dysynni A.C. athletes then followed in the guise of John Tee of Blaenau Ffestiniog, 3rd in the Male Over-65 section in 1hr 23.16mins, Brenda Jones of Llanelltyd, victorious in the Female Over-70 category in an excellent 1hr 32.18mins and the remarkable Sheila Symonds of Dolgellau, victorious in the Female Over-75 category in 2hrs 27.39mins.

There was also midweek action recently as Nant Peris played host to the 4th race of the Joe Brown 19th Midweek Fell Running Series. The event in question, the Pendinas Fell Race, measured 1.5miles which included 1,000 feet of climbing within the first half of the race. Representing Meirionnydd R.C. at the event was Alun Jones of Blaenau Ffestiniog who completed the course in a pleasing time of 39.27mins.
