A total of ten locally affiliated athletes were in action recently at the Rhug Organic sponsored North Wales Cross Country Championships which were held at the Rhug Estate near Corwen.

Of the ten, a total of four were in action in the 'Senior Male' event, and they were led home by Ifan Richards, the Brithdir-based athlete leading home the Meirionnydd R.C. trio in action within the race in a time of 41.02mins, which claimed an overall 10th placed finish. Club colleague, Glyn Griffin of Penrhyndeudraeth followed, claiming an impressive 14th spot finish in a time of 42.19mins, a little over 2 minutes clear of Dewi Roberts of Blaenau Ffestiniog, the Bro Dysynni A.C. athlete making a rare cross country appearance, claiming 23rd spot in a time of 44.30mins. The quartet were completed by Clive Edgington of Arthog, the 3rd Meirionnydd finisher, a time of 44.56mins also claiming 3rd spot within the Male Over-55 category.

Two further athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd R.C. placed well within their resepctive age categories, John Smith of Dolgellau claiming 2nd spot within the Male Over-60 section in a time of 41.19mins whilst Barrie Jackson of Bala claimed 4th spot in the Male Over-70 category in a time of 36.38mins.

At the other end of the age spectrum, two younger athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd placed well within the 'Male Under-17' section, Alex Lanz of Dolgellau 5th overall in a time of 21.50mins, a little over a minute clear of club colleague, Jamie Evans of Bryncrug, who claimed 7th spot within the category in a time of 22.52mins.

In the 'Senior Ladies' category, Andrea Vaughan of Ganllwyd provided a combative performance to claim an overall 14th placed finishing spot, the Meirionnydd R.C. athlete crossing the line in a time of 26.08mins whilst Brenda Jones of Llanelltyd continued to dominate the Female Over-70 section, on this occasion the Bro Dysynni athlete claiming age category victory in a time of 35.54mins.

Prior to the above, a trio of locally affiliated athletes were also in road running action, their chosen event being the Twin Piers 10k Race, an event starting in Llandudno before heading up the coast to the finishing line in Colwyn Bay. There was an intriguing tussle between two Ffestiniog based athletes at the event with Dysynni athlete Dewi Roberts just pipping his Meirionnydd counterpart, Mark Atherton, in respective finishing times of 37.02mins & 38.00mins. The trio in action were completed by the Marj Griffiths of Aberystwyth, the seasoned campaigner affiliated to Bro Dysynni A.C. claiming age category success within the Female Over-65 section in a time of 62.16mins.

There is local action this coming Saturday lunchtime (11th), as Abergynolwyn will play host to the Railway Inn sponsored Ras Tarren Hendre. The 6 mile race, which includes 2,000 feet of climbing, is also the second event of the three race Meirionnydd Winter Race Series and is due off at 12.00 Noon.
