News Report 4th December 2010
The ice and the snow did little to deter the 22 athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd Running Club who recently headed to Ysgol Morgan Llwyd in Wrexham, the venue chosen to host the 3rd fixture of the season of the Grand Prix Express North Wales Cross Country League.
Having already established a healthy lead at the top of Division 2 of the Men's League after two fixtures, the 12 strong male contingent further enhanced their lead at the top, making them very strong favourites for promotion with two fixtures remaining. Leading home the 'Meirionnydd dozen' was Ifan Richards of Brithdir, 7th overall in a time of 31.06mins with team-mates Tom Roberts and Huw Brassington claiming respective 17th & 21st positions, the Dolgellau-based athlete home in 32.20mins with his Bontddu based colleague following in 32.50mins. Other Meirionnydd finishers within the race were the Dolgellau-based duo of Kevin Jones & Adam Preston in times of 33.26mins & 33.32mins, Hefin Jones of Blaenau Ffestiniog in 33.52, Dylan Evans of Aberdyfi in 37.59mins, Tony Hodgson of Llanelltyd in 38.37mins, Ricky Francis of Talyllyn in 38.45mins, Frankie Vaughan of Ganllwyd in 39.22mins, Glyn Rowlands of Arthog in 39.38mins and Pete Nicholls of Llanfachreth in 40.06mins. As a result of the strong turnout, the Meirionnydd team now lead the Men's Division 2 League by a massive 254 points, indeed their current points tally would place them in 3rd position within the top tier of the North Wales Cross Country League.
In the Male Under-17's event, there were pleasing finishing positions of 8th and 9th for Alex Lanz of Dolgellau & Jamie Evans of Aberdyfi as they completed their course in respective times of 19.24mins & 20.40mins.
In the Female Race, the 8 strong Meirionnydd contingent were led home by Andrea Vaughan in a time of 22.57mins. Following the Ganllwyd-based athlete home were Judith Cole of Dinas Mawddwy & Janet Preston of Dolgellau in times of 23.52mins & 25.53mins. The squad were completed with strong displays from Sioned Jones of Brithdir, home in 27.20mins, Margaret Roberts of Dolgellau in 28.04mins, Jude Evans of Aberdyfi in 28.22mins with Mandy Price of Brithdir & Heidi Roden of Arthog crossing the line together in a time of 30.00mins.
As a result of the above the Meirionnydd Ladies Team currently lay in 5th position in Division 2, although with two more league fixtures remaining, a top 3 finish remains a very real possibility.
