Llangollen was the chosen venue for a trio of athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd Running Club recently, their chosen event being the 9.5 mile Moel Y Gamelin Fell Race which included climbs totalling 2,380 feet. Continuing his recent fine form was Welsh international runner, Ifan Richards, on this occasion the Brithdir-based athlete claiming runners-up spot at the event in a fine time of 1hr 15.52mins. Also performing admirably was Mark Atherton of Llan Ffestiniog, claiming a 17th spot finish in a time of 1hr 28.02mins. The trio was completed by Juliet Edwards of Dolgellau, 2nd finisher in the Female Over-45 category, in a time of 1hr 50.05mins.

Two Bro Dysynni athletes were also in action recently at opposite ends of the Principality. In the north, Dewi Roberts of Blaenau Ffestiniog claimed a magnificent 7th spot out of the 293 competitors in action at the popular Felinheli 10k race in a time 37.24mins, whilst in the South, Gavin Griffiths showed his Tywyn-based prowess as he completed the Llanwonno 5 Mile Forestry Race in Pontypridd in a fine time of 38.26mins, which, in turn, claimed a 37th placed finishing spot.

This coming Saturday there are two events being held locally. First to start will be the Organic Aran Lamb sponsored Ras Yr Aran. The race is being made all the more special as it has been chosen to host the Welsh leg of the 2011 British Fell Running Championships with the list of pre-entrants including the cream of the British fell running fraternity. The 10 mile race which includes an overall 3,100 feet of climbing is due off at 1.00pm from the village hall, with the shorter 2 mile Ras Y Garth which includes 500 feet of climbing due off at 1.15pm. Further details regarding the event are available at www.run-meirionnydd.co.uk. Also on Saturday, Bryncrug will play host to the annual running of Ras Foel Gocyn which forms an integral part of the Bryncrug carnival day proceedings. The 4 mile race is due off from the carnival field at 2pm. Entries will be accepted only on the day.
