Whereas the majority of the 67 strong field who gathered in Penmaenpool last Saturday lunchtime for the 9th running of the TRAILWORKS Penmaenpool 10 Mile Trail Race were mainly of local origin, it was left to two athletes who had travelled 'from across the border' to dominate proceedings in a keenly contested event. The two athletes in question were Tom Kenderdine (Halesowen AC) & Peter Middleton (Shrewsbury AC), claiming overall race victory and runners-up spot in impressive times of 56.19mins & 57.48mins.

A familiar name dominated proceedings in the female section of the race as Phoebe Webster (Aberystwyth AC) claimed her 4th race victory, the quadruple being achieved in conjunction with her successes at the event in 2006, 2007 & 2009. What was all the more pleasing for the seasoned Aberystwyth campaigner was that her time last Saturday was her fastest ever winning time at the event. Runners-up spot in the female category went to Alison Lavender (Oswestry Olympians) in a time of 1hr 05.45mins.

With a strong local flavour amongst the field, notable times attained by locally affiliated athletes included two placings within the top 10 as the Dolgellau-based duo of Tom Roberts and Kevin Jones claimed 5th and 7th places respectively, the Meirionnydd Running Club duo home in times of 1hr 01.20mins & 1hr 03.32mins. A further trio of Meirionnydd athletes followed, namely Adam Preston (Dolgellau), home in 1hr 05.52mins, Ricky Francis (Talyllyn), home in 1hr 14.03mins & Pete Nicholls (Llanfachreth), home in 1hr 14.32mins. Two Tywyn-based Bro Dysynni athletes followed as Richard Griffiths crossed the line in a time of 1hr 16.58mins with Walter Marsh, returning to the local running scene after a break, hot on his heels in a time of 1hr 18.54mins. There then followed another 9 athletes affiliated to Meirionnydd R.C. as Kevin Evans (Brithdir) led home Nich Bradley (Dolgellau) in times of 1hr 20.00mins & 1hr 21.39mins. The 1st female athlete affiliated to Meirionnydd to cross the line was Bethan Johnson of Arthog, her time of 1hr 22.29mins also establishing a Meirionnydd female club record for the event. Two further Dolgellau-based athletes followed as Dai Rice led home Janet Preston in times of 1hr 32.28mins & 1hr 33.04mins with Cemmaes-based Fiona Smith following in 1hr 37.03mins. There was also a return to competitve action for Rob Thomas of Llanelltyd, home in 1hr 43.59mins, with the Dolgellau-duo of Heidi Roden & Amanda Price following, crossing the line together in a time of 1hr 45.57mins. The locally affiliated contingent was completed by the evergreen Marj Griffiths, the Bro Dysynni stalwart crossing the line in 1hr 48.03mins.

In the affiliated 2 mile fun run, there was double Dolgellau success as Katie Bailey and Robyn Macer-Price were first girl and boy home in respective times of 16.14mins & 23.05mins.

As ever, the race organisers expressed their gratitude to all concerned with the race organisation, from volunteer marshalls to race sponsors (TRAILWORKS) as well as to the support of Snowdonia National Park.
