Glyn Griffin in action at the Skiddaw event.

There was further international recognition recently for Llanfrothen based athlete, Glyn Griffin, picking up his 2nd Welsh cap whilst representing the Principality at the British Athletics Mountain Running Senior Home International Race at the Skiddaw Uphill Mountain Race in the Lake District, the event also chosen to incorporate the 2013 UK Athletics European Mountain Running Championship Trials. In a race which included a total of 1,080 metres of climbing within its 11.3k duration, the Meirionnydd RC athlete , proudly wearing his Welsh vest, completed the course in a time of 1hr 05.21mins to claim an overall 27th spot finish in a field of exceptional quality. Also competing in Skiddaw was Meirionnydd club colleague, Ifan Richards, still recovering from his exertions after his recent victory at the Cader Idris Race, on this occasion the Brithdir based athlete completing the course in a time of 1hr 12.21mins which claimed an overall 35th finishing spot within the event.

Three locally based affiliated athletes also picked up regional age category awards at the recent Rhyl Suncentre 5k Road Race, an event which also incorporated the 2013 North Wales 5k Road Running Championship Race. Leading home a trio of Meirionnydd R.C. athletes in action was Clive Edgington of Friog, claiming age category success within the Male Over-55 section in an outstanding time of 19.08mins, with club colleagues Arfon Hughes of Dolgellau & Ricky Francis of Talyllyn following in respective times of 19.14mins & 19.53mins. The two Bro Dysynni A.C. athletes in action both claimed age category awards as Brenda Jones of Llanelltyd was victorious within the Female Over-70 section in a time of 27.37mins whilst Sheila Symonds of Dolgellau continues to re-write the record books, claiming age category success within the Female Over-80 section in a tremendous time of 43.37mins. There was also an impressive performance within the 1k Junior Race with Harri Hughes of Dolgellau claiming 3rd place within the Under-14 age group, the Meirionnydd athlete home in a time of 3.47mins.

There was also local interest at the recent Edinburgh Marathon Festival with two familiar names appearing within the results section. In the full marathon race, Sandra Williams of Dolgellau was in action, the Meirionnydd R.C. athlete covering the 26.2 mile course in an excellent time of 3hrs 56.47mins whilst over the half marathon course, Rebecca Dallimore, previously of Dolgellau and Bro Dysynni A.C. covered the 13.1 mile distance in a time of 1hr 44.13mins.

One locally affiliated athlete in action at the Abersoch 10k Race held last Saturday was Alan Jones of Blaenau Ffestiniog, the Meirionnydd R.C. athlete completing the course in a time of 39.22mins to claim an overall 17th placed finish, whilst club colleague, Jeff Davies, completed the Newbury Park 5k Run held on Greenham Common in Berkshire in a time of 20.48mins to set a new Meirionnydd R.C. age category record over the distance within the Male Over-65 section.
