Ifan Richards in action at the recent British and Irish Masters Cross Country International in Cardiff

International recognition was recently bestowed upon two locally affiliated athletes chosen to represent Wales within their respective age category groups at the recent British and Irish Masters Cross Country International which was held at Blackweir Fields in Cardiff. Representing Wales within the Male 35 - 39 age group category was Ifan Richards of Brithdir, the Meirionnydd Running Club athlete covering the 8k course in a time of 27.21 mins with Wales claiming an overall 2nd spot behind the Republic of Ireland within this age section. Representing Wales within the Female 65 and over age category was Bro Dysynni athlete, Brenda Jones, the Llanelltyd based athlete covering her 6k course in a time of 32.32 mins to help Wales to an overall 3rd placed finish within this category behind England and the Republic of Ireland.

Ten local athletes were amongst over 2,220 competitors who recently took on the 13.1 mile challenge presented by the 5th running of the Conwy Half Marathon. Starting and finishing by Conwy Castle, the local contingent were led home by Gemma Jennings, the Harlech based athlete producing a sterling performance to finish in an overall time of 1 hr 38.55 mins. Bro Dysynni athlete, James Bradbury-Willis, was next home, the Tywyn based athlete covering the course in 1 hr 49.46 mins .Little seperated two Meirionnydd R.C. athletes as Nicola Rees and Heidi Roden, both of Arthog, came home in respective times of 1 hr 57.42 mins and 1 hr 57.50 mins. Another Meirionnydd athlete followed with Jacqueline Fowler of Trawsfynydd crossing the finishing line in a time of 2 hrs 03.08 mins, just under 5 minutes clear of Geraint Evans of Porthmadog, the Bro Dysynni athlete home in 2 hrs 07.57 mins. Tesni Rowlands of Llan Ffestiniog and Sera Griffith of Harlech crossed the line together in times of 2 hrs 20.08 mins and 2 hrs 20.09 mins with Christine Owen of Dolgellau following, the 4th Meirionnydd finisher, in a time of 2 hrs 21.46 mins. The Meirionnydd contingent was completed by Haydn Fowler of Trawsfynydd and Lucie Llewellyn of Dinas Mawddwy, home in times of 2 hrs 29.53 mins and 2 hrs 40.09 mins.

One athlete affiliated to Meirionnydd R.C. undertaking intense training recently is Ashley Charlwood, the Dolgellau based athlete preparing for the challenge of a lifetime as he will head out to Morocco next April to complete in the 156 mile Marathon des Sables, an event run over 6 days in the Sahara desert. His latest competitive preparation came at the Likeys Brecon Beacon Ultra Marathon, a 46 mile multi-terrained event which the Dolgellau athlete completed in a time of 8 hrs 12.23 mins.

Bontddu-based triathlete, Huw Brassington, continued to enjoy his forays into the sport of fell running as he recently completed the 10 mile Penmaenmawr Fell Race, which included an overall 1,950 feet of climbing, in a time of 1 hr 18.49 mins, a time good enough to claim a 7th placed finish on the day.

Finally, Meirionnydd R.C. were also recently represented at the Swindon 10k by Jeff Davies who completed the Wiltshire based challenge in a time of 42.09 mins.
